Hi all,

Is there a method to mount backup files without having access to WHS2011? My youngest is moving out soon and won't have access to the family backup server but would like to take his files with him.

Thanks for any tips.

I have no experience with WHS2011.
But why not just make the server visible to the public internet.
He then could access it with you IP Number.
You can look up your router and settings for port forwarding at https://portforward.com

Just follow the steps.

Now bear in mind your son would be using your upload speed set by your ISP, so if it is much lower than your download speed it could get very slow for him to access.

I didn't mention it above, but my goal is to move on from WHS2011, not perpetuate it. It needs to be retired.
I'm not a fan of opening the server to the internet.
We have crap for internet speeds (Centurylink) so remote access becomes even more unpalatable.

But thanks for the info.

The home server backups are in a proprietary format, you can access them using the WHS software only. If he wants his files, best bet is to mount a backup and copy all the files he wants onto his computer that he takes with him.
