Post subject:  Connector software regularly loses connectivity on Win 7

I have a WHS 2011 box that is fully patched with only stablebit drivepool, drive scanner, and cloud drive installed. I have had other addins in the past installed however i removed them, and uninstalled them under programs, and featrues. The only roles I have for the machine are AD services, File services, and Network access policy services. I uninstalled the web server role trying to troubleshoot.

All but one of my clients are Win 7 boxes, and the connector app for each will not login to the server even after a fresh restart. After a while, I lose the ability to connect to the machine via RDP as well. When this happens I can usually get to my file shares but navigating to them via file explorer, and entering my credentials on the clients but even doing this connectivity seems to be in and out. All of these machines except one are connected via ethernet, and network throughput doesn't appear to me to be a problem although I have ordered a better router (Peplink soho). How can I start troubleshooting my problems. I primarily use this machine for media sharing and storage. Thank you. If it matters, I don't have any certs for any services on the machine yet. i would like to reinstall the web server role, and get a current cert at some point but I need the machine to run correctly first.

Well I can only speak of whs1.
I have found that the ip changes each time the router reboots.
Which causes grief for a while.
Even though file explorer works , the console does not.
so the call name default such as hpstorage does not work on some clients sometimes.
Unless the original ip address of the server is valid again
I have reserved the ip for the server in the router in my case to be the same as original.
That fixed the issue for me.

I'll be reserving more IPs when I setup the new router. I have had to reboot my router a few times over the last few days but my problem was that the time on the machine was reset to 2002. I'm still looking for a good methodology for troubleshooting the server though. Being able to view logs, and knowing which logs to look at would be helpful in the future. Thanks for the help.

It looks like the problem might be back again. Any advice on how to troubleshoot?

When you say the time on the machine was reset.
Do you mean the server?
In that case it could be the battery for bios might be dead.
Of course that means you have to tear it completely apart to get to the battery.

yes, the time for the server had set itself to 2002 somehow. If this happens again I'll pull the bios battery but I need to make sure I can set the bios clock correctly. I have a vga cable for the server but i'm not sure how well a usb keyboard will work. Come to find out, I am now only having perssitent problems on one machine. The rest of them have been good all week so far. Is there a log on the client connector software I can look at to try and troubleshoot? Is there somewhere in particular on the server I can view information about particular clients? Thanks again for your help.

Well, the problem came back so I went ahead and put a new battery in the MOBO. Now I can't get into BIOS to set the time. I am using a 2 pin connector to bridge the connectors next to the debug port on the MOBO (Right next to where the card that holds the hard drives goes) but no luck. I have a usb keyboard connected the lower most rear USB input, and I'm jamming delete when the PC starts but I can't get into bios. I have a VGA cable connected to the debug board so I can see the screen. Thanks.

how are you connected to the server for video?

I have a cable that has a vga out on one end, and connects to the mobo on the other It is only a video cable. I grabbed it off of ebay. Is there a way to force this thing into BIOS? I tried disconnecting all drives but it just tries to boot off of the NIC card. If I reset the bios (I'm assuming that's what the other set of jumpers are for on the MOBO) will it automatically boot into BIOS settings?

I'll add that I have tried two separate jumpers with no luck, and I'm using a wireless keyboard. The front USB port does not seem to work when it boots, but the back three seem to work fine.

Not sure how the hell you can connect a wireless keyboard?
Always used a wired keyboard.
Anyway possible this may help.

Read it all and the last part for default settings.

Here is the jumper needed:

I'll clarify that a little bit. I have used two keyboards that connect to wireless USB recievers that I have plugged into the server. I looked over those two threads but I didn't see much that helped. I'll try getting a WIRED usb keyboard and connecting It to the front port. Would you have any idea why the server would not recognized my wireless keyboards during startup when I connect them to the front port? Do you have anymore helpful links? Thanks.

We need to remember that the server is very old now including the drivers.

To be honest I have never used a wireless keyboard so I am not sure.

I grabbed a wired usb keyboard just to eliminate the possibility. Windows seems like it is keeping its time for now but my dashboard still loses connectivity about every two days. I see error code 8032 around the time that this happens, and the description for that code is something along the lines of the server failed to find the backup browser. Does that give me any direction?

I'll add that when I get some time, I'm going to tear down the machine again and try the other keyboard. Relating to my browser error, its probably relevant that I mention I have disabled SMBv1 on all of my machines. I am also testing out removing the dependency on SMBv1 from the LanManService
