Post subject:  WHS2011 Connector may stop working w/Windows 10 Anniv Aug 2

Some background first. For Windows 10 Microsoft has an Insider program. The purpose of the Insider program is to allow users worldwide to test new builds as they are developed. The program is a big program with about 7 million Windows 10 users testing new builds. There has been a big push within Microsoft to put out new builds, with new features and bug fixes, for a while now because they've announced that on August 2, 2016 they will update what I'm calling an enhanced version of Windows 10, called the Windows 10 Anniversary.

Around May 30, 2016 they released another Insider build and the Windows Home Server 2011 Connector stopped working. Typically in the past there had been some issues with the Connector and the way it was solved was to uninstall it and reinstall it. Now, when you try and reinstall it you get a message that "The Windows Home Server 2011 Connector has encountered an unexpected error. Click Close to undo most of the changes that are made to this computer." You can no longer reinstall the Connector software.

In my environment, I have three PC's. Two of them are on the Windows 10 Insider program and the behavior/error message is the same on both of them. On my third PC, it is running the current/RTM/non-Insider version of Windows 10 and it doesn't have any problems. It is backed up daily, drives are mapped and you have access to the Dashboard and Launchpad. So, with only a sample size of three, I am concerned about the impact that Windows 10 Anniversary will have on however many WHS 2011 servers are still operating. To me, unless I have some kind of a configuration problem that I'm not aware of, potentially every WHS 2011 server with Windows 10 clients will no longer deliver the WHS 2011 services after August 2, 2016.

So, I would be interested in feedback.

1. If you have a WHS 2011 server with Windows 10 clients that ARE NOT in the Insider program, let me know.

2. If you have a WHS 2011 server with Windows 10 clients that ARE IN the Insider program, let me know what your experiences are. Does the Connector still work?

I guess if no one responds, then I'm out there by myself and will need to look for another solution. Any feedback or thoughts will be helpful to all.

Take care - Chuck

I have three computers running Windows 10.0.10586. As far as I know this is the latest for the mainstream updates. So far everything is working as it should. The last update for the WHS 2011 is KB915597 (Definition 1.225.2131.0) on 7/22/16.

William, thank you for the information. The issue is I believe you are running, as you said, the latest mainstream version. As a Windows 10 Insider, I'm running today the version that will probably be released to the general public on August 2, 2016, (OS Build 14393.3 which in your description I believe would be 10.0.14393.3). The Connector no longer works and you can't reinstall it. A change Microsoft made around the end of May caused this to happen and it hasn't been fixed since then. I'm trying to bring to people's attention that when your systems are updated on August 2, the Connector will not work anymore and you can't reinstall it, unless a fix is found between now and then. I've been providing feedback to Microsoft since the end of May and I haven't gotten any traction. I have a Microsoft MVP looking into this and either I have something unique in my configurations or if not, hopefully she can influence a patch or whatever is required to not lose the functionality.

This is my assessment. I was hoping to get people who are in the Windows 10 Insider program to speak up and confirm my experiences are happing to their systems or they are working great.

Now I know why I did not upgrade any of my clients to win 10.
I do have a DIY Server2012E , but I'm guessing it is just a matter of time before Microsoft kills that.
I see dark times for Them on the road they are going.
Good Luck :-#

Microsoft support for Server 2012 ends 1-9-18. So you got 18 months left.

:offtopic: Rant, sorry!

I swear, I will run win 7 and WHS v1 into the ground and if Microsoft has not changed there ways, I will leave them behind.
Macs and Chrome books with a couple of Networked Drobo's. They can take there cloud and stuff it. They have gone off the rails.

Can anybody else confirm this? The Newest Win 10 Build breaks Whs 2011 connector? ](*,)

Yes I can. And the odd thing is that it effects machines different. After the 1607 upgrade my server still backs up but the dashboard doesn't work from the client computer. It will work if I remote in to the server. The Microsoft forums have some more people with issues.

I have updated 3 Win10 machines to 1607 and all work just fine with WHS2011. I did have to remove and reinstall the connector software but after doing that it all works.

I did see over at your link, that some (that could not re-install the connector) ended up doing a complete clean re-install of win 10 and then the connector would install and work.
Some just had to re-install the connector.
Some just needed to replace a DLL file that made the Launch pad buttons disappear.

So may be hope yet.
Still glad I am at Win7.

Good Luck

Can I succeed if I attempt to use my EX485 to back-up my two client PC's running Win10 Pro. I'm willing to go through some tedium if success is possible.

I have WHS2003 already installed and it is running (I have a VGA debug cable), but running the Connector wizard from my client gives the message the server cannot be found (I have tried both automatically and manually)

I have a set of WHS2011 installation disks, but running the setup gives the message: This app cannot run on your PC. To find a version for your PC, check with the software publisher."

[[ on a related side note: when the EX485 is connected to my router, it does not show up as a Connected Device, although I do get activity lights blinking on the ethernet connector at the back of the server and the appropriate port of my router]]

Any help is most appreciated.

Best regards for a blessed, healthy and prosperous New Year
David

David,

In case you haven't given up on the MSS, Since you've tried doing your setup thru a router, have you tried using the HP supplied LAN cable and connect it directly to the MSS to setup the terminals?

Not sure what the difference is on the HP supplied cable but there is (ended up finding this out the hard way on my own EX49x setup).

We're now into 2021. Does anyone have WHS2011 working with a workstation running a current version of Windows 10? I not that many of the services that used to sit in the services.msc file for WHS are no longer there.

If you are running WHS2011 with Win10, how did you do it?

If you have given up on WHS2011, how did you repurpose your server hardware into another like-solution?
