I have a new WD 3TB NAS drive on its way. I also have an upgrade to WHS 2011 sitting on my desk that I have been nervous about installing.. Should I upgrade to 2011 or put the drive in first? This is on a HP Mediasmart EX495 with original OS, slightly upgraded CPU and memory.

Thanks, RIch

You wont be able to easily add the 3TB drive to the pool without some serious hacking to access the full 2.78TB. You can however easily add it as a backup drive if you format it GPT 1st.

WHS2011 will work without problems as long as it's not the boot drive.

Yes, upgrade to WHS 2011 first. WHS2011 and Win 7/8 support GPT if not boot drive.

WHS2011 will boot from a GPT drive if it is on a UEFI system actually.

But you should not want partitions > 2TB for any drive if you want them to be backed up using WHS 2011 Server Backup.
