I was going to try and do this via RDC from an Android app but I realise that's not really what the RDC on a server is intended for.

So, what's the best, secure way to remotely stream media from my WHS 2011 box to my Android device?

Thanks :)

Best way I know of is to install Remote Potato on your server: http://www.remotepotato.com/

While on the Remote Potato site they will list an Android App called Remote Media Center which is available from Google Play. You will also need a video player on your phone or tablet and while many do work I find Rock Player Lite works well.

Once you set things up you can stream your content from a multitude of devices. Its very easy to setup and works extremely well. I have tested it on WHS v1, WHS2011 and Windows 8 using Android 2.3, 3.x and 4.x on cell phones and tablets as well as Windows.

Remote Potato or Plex.

Not sure if much has changed since I wrote my guide, but see here for Remote Potato:

And here for Plex:

I still run Subsonic for both video and music on my WHS v1 server which those who use it like it for music even though I have a license for streaming movies my family likes Remote Potato for movies.

I had only ever used subsonic for music. When I went to the cloud though (Google Music) I lost the need to use subsonic anymore.

I don't actually know if they are the best just that they work and I still use them.

If you have Subsonic installed then the app you want is also named Subsonic.

If you have Remote Potato installed then the app you want is called Remote Media Center.
