The other half is thinking of getting one of these as she doesn't need a full laptop for everything

I've heard stories that it won't backup to whs2011 properly and dashboard installation

Does anyone know if it does work properly or not?
Or if there are any other problems with windows 8 "laptops"

And merry Christmas to everyone !

That's the big question isn't it. I do not believe the RT version will work so look towards the Surface Pro or Surface Pro 2 as it has the full Windows 8.x OS installed on it. You may also want to look towards the other Tablets available as there are many now. I know I am in the same boat as I am looking to integrate a tablet not so much with WHS2011 but WS2012E and a VPN Connection so having the full OS makes more sense to me. Backing it up is one thing but restoring is the other and how that takes place.

Anyway I am still debating on what to get for a tablet but have a bit more time to figure this one out.

If you want to backup a Surface tablet to WHS2011, it has to be the Windows 8 or 8.1. Not RT. Also you will have to download the WHS2011 hotfix that allows backup of a UEFI partition that the tablet uses.

Thanks for that info both,
The surface pro is way out of the question at £750 here...

Will the surface RT at least be able to map the network drive from the whs? And be able to access the shares?

Yes, with my Surface RT 8.1 I have added the network shares to the libraries and use Comix to read my .cbr comics. I can also listen to audio, view pictures, and play videos. I am looking forward to VLC RT being released.

I can also remote desktop into my server or any other machine on my network.

Just to be clear, WS2012E does not allow you to register it, or back it up. However, it will back itself up to your SkyDrive if you enable it, and there is the Windows 8 app "My Server" which you can use to access your stuff outside of your own network.

I understand that WS2012ER2 will allow you to register phones and tablets with the server.
