I'm going to be upgrading my EX490 to WHS 2011, and wanted to check on the best way to backup and restore my data.

What i currently own:
- EX490 with 2 drives. the Stock 1 TB & an additional 2TB that i added when i bought it
- few folders are duplicated (music & photos)
- using approximately 2TB in total.

Here is what i have done so far:
- upgraded CPU to E8500 - running fast and cool. CPU price seems to be reasonable enough @ $43
- could not find RAM at a reasonable prices > $100
- Bought 2 4TB seagate drives
- Bought eSATA dock (support 2.5, 3.5 and up to 4TB drivers)
- WHS 2011 OS
- 8GB USB stick

My plan:
- stop the duplication on folders
- Shutdown the EX490, remove the 2 drives
- connect the 2TB to the eSATA dock and try to read from my windows 7 laptop
- if i can't read it. Copy my data to the one of the 4TB drives using the eSATA dock - call it the data drive.
- once backup is verified, move to the install using the new 4TB by following the USB stick with the ini file.
- once installation is complete and basic configuration is done, add the data drive

Questions:
- is the plan sound? what would you recommend improving?
- do i need StableBit or drivebender? and why? can I just use folder within drives
- what is a good antivirus for this setup

You feedback is greatly appreciated.

Question!
Why are you contemplating spending some serious money on upgrading a system that you have barely utilized, That works perfectly fine as is?

More disk space as I'm moving my Blu-Ray collections to the library. The cost of the upgrade between CPU and WHS is less than $100 and will have the ability to add up to 16TB (4 x 4TB). minimal investment from my side for something that will last at least for a few more year. I'm also looking to have better remote connectivity to my library in addition to a itunes home share.

okay. you do know you can get about 17TB with the existing unit?
That is why I asked.
Of course whsv1 does not support 4tb drives.
Nor the 8gb of ram.

But anyway. You would be fine for what your plans are.
The only thing I see is you might consider turning off all duplication before the process.
It would just make it more simple finding files to copy over to the new drives.
Which you already have considered.
As far as anti virus.
I have found most all products work(norton.trendmicro) and you don't really need to install them in the server os.
As long as the client is running it will look at the server.

BTW,
Going to WHS 2011 you will loose some features you had in whs1.
You are aware that you will need other addins to compliment it since you will no longer have DE. Such as stablebit or drivebenderl?
Unless you don't care about the feature or features lost.

Thanks Ruben.

Question, is there a physical limitation on the drives used? I thought that was an OS limitation? Maybe BIOS?
I will report back my findings.

I'm considering Stablebit for DE replacement. Additional features i will be looking for add-Ins. any you recommend?

Btw, I don't consider the money spent on drives as wasted, as i could reuse those 4TB in any future RAID or media server. I was initially considering the Proliant Microserver + WSE2012, however, it was high cost.

Well I come from the 32 bit whsv1 world which does have a limit of 2tb for drives and a 3.2gb limit on ram.
Which currently I have 4 -2tb drives and 1-1tb drive using a q9450s cpu and stock ram and a sans digital esata 5 port multiplyer.
So I am not sure on the 4tb limit for whs 2011, but it should be okay from what I read.
Others need to chime in.
