Can someone opine on how similar/different the mechanics of backing up and restoring clients PCs is on WHS2011/Windows Storage Server R2 Essentials (hereinafter WSSe) is from the good ol' WHS that we know and love?
From the screenshots that LaCie has posted
here and
here, the procedures look pretty darn familiar (good), and there's an additional option to create a USB key boot disk (better!).
Does it pretty much work like ye ol' WHS?
Some improvements I'm looking for would be:
- Client-side notification for "No backups in XX days." Under old WHS this alert was sent out by the server, so if the server died or was offline, there would be no notification. Who made that design decision?!?!?!?
- Have an option to do Manuals backups that are managed automatically. Under old WHS manual backups were manually managed, and you couldn't change that until the backup had finished, which I always forget to do.
- Option to edit the Boot.ini file on the restored HDD. Under old WHS I had a few situations where, typically after replacing a dead client HDD, the new one didn't have the same partitioning as the old one, and the restored system wouldn't boot until I'd moved the HDD to a USB/SATA enclosure, mounted it on another PC, edited the boot.ini file, and then put it back in its original computer. Ugh.
