Ive got an EX490 with whs2011 & am waiting on another EX490 with the original whs. I'm planning to upgrade the memory and CPU on the second server, while still having server number 1 online. Is it possible to just swap the system drives between the two servers once the hardware is installed, or must I get the second server it's own copy of whs2011?

I know you can swap drives between similar MSS units running the original software without issue. I think if you swap the drives out between servers you may be prompted by a Microsoft Prompt because of a hardware change being different than the original install.

Question for me is why do you want to upgrade the new server and swap the drives? Why not just upgrade the current server and just leave the drives where they are and do what you will with the new server and it accomplishes the same thing without the issue of the license question.
