My drives in my DataVault are cooking!

I've got WHS 2011 and I guess I didn't notice the fan isn't speeding up appropriately :(

The fan hovers around 850 rpm and only seems to increase if the motherboard gets hot.

I tried speed fan - it can see the fan and all the temperature sensors on the motherboard and hard drives, but it doesn't seem to affect the speed of the fan - no matter what I do!

Any other suggestions?

Might need a bit more information on the hardware you have in your server, but... Case, motherboard, number of fans, etc...

One thing to check is BIOS settings relating to fans. If you intend to use speedfan, you have to make sure the BIOS is not controlling the fans. Usually this is some sort of setting like constant/fixed duty cycle...

Also... at what temp are your drives operating at?

It depends on the machine you are using. Speedfan works very well on Ex485's but does not work or show fan speed on a Ex490/95. The Ex485's require Speedfan 4.43 and 4.44 doesn't work at all. So it's very dependant on what MSS you have. I think on a 485 you have to specify allow override of bios fan speed in the bios. I can't remember since I run Ex495 bios in both my Ex485's.

I moved this topic, he originally posted it in the DataVault forum.

Thanks - it's a data vault. I'll see about the older version of speed fan, but I may just see if I can hotwire the fan to just run full speed if that doesn't work :(

In the end I couldn't get any software to work - the BIOS is apparently overriding it.

So I read up on four wire fans. It turns out the blue wire (pin 1 - opposite the black wire on pin 4) is the pulse control for the fan speed. So I just unplugged the fan, bent the blue wire pin down, plugged the connector back in and the fan did what I wanted - spun up to full speed!

Woot! If I had a debug cable, I'm sure I could have changed the speed in the BIOS or turned off the BIOS control, but I didn't feel like making or buying a debug monitor cable
