Hi,

I'm considering installing WHS2011 on my HP datavault X510, and have a couple of queries please...

-Is there an alternative method to the thumb drive approach?
-Looks like I'll only be able to purchase a WHS 2011 64bit 10 client install CD from an online retailer here in Australia. If I do this, could I simply install the WHS 2011 onto a HDD via my desktop, then place this in the system drive bay?
-Will the unit pick it up?

Thank you kindly

Does this mean that it can't be done this way?

Search will have turned up the answers to your questions. Yes, you can install onto a drive connected to your PC. When the system goes down for the first reboot, install the drive in the bottom slot of the server and power it on. Give it a while to finish the install process, then connect via your browser to configure.

Here's a step by step of what I did to install via this method...

1. Removed HDD from my desktop and installed a new HDD ready for WHS2011 install
2. Ran installation disc and powered down as soon as the first reboot took place as described above
3. Removed HDD from desktop PC and placed into the first drive bay (System drive) of my Datavault x510
4. Powered on the server and waited for about 30 mins...lights were aqua blue across the board and one was blinking.
5. It seemed to have stopped in its tracks, so I opened my browser and tried to connect to it using http:///connect as outlined in the guides here, but no go...I now realise the three /// mean that there shoud be a server name in between the second and third /. #-o
6. I then looked over the booklet I received with the OEM installation disc and found that I should be typing http://server/connect to set it up, so I did and it worked. (Different server name now obviously)
7. it prompted me to download a setup wizard, so I did that and went through the motions of configuring.
8. I'm setup now...

Add ins time...
-I wanted to fix the LEDs because they naturally stopped working with the upgrade, so I installed HPMssService setup. After some light configuration of their config file due to stablebit creating a blinking aqua light sensation instead of a solid light, it was right as rain.
-Obviously installed stablebit as well. Very impressed with this addin.

All in all, I would say that this was a successful upgrade, and so far, I am very happy with it's overall performance and sleek look of the gui compared to V1.

I'm so tempted to do this.
