How do I get the install disk onto the USB for installation?
The Windows 7 USB to DVD tool will not work apparently.
Tried to make an ISO copy of disk using MagicISO and the USB tool still does not see the file.

Followed some instruction that use the Comand Prompt to prepair the memory stick then copied the files from the disk to the USB drive.
Followed the Mediasmartserver.net instructions for the EX4xx series & the light blinks red & blue for about 2 or 3 seconds then goes solid red and nothing else happens.

Does the software key need to be added to the cfg.ini file some how? If so, were & how.

Is it possible my USB drive is not compatible?
The 4 GB drive I had used for the Beta Vail install was to small so, I picked up a Pony 8 GB.
Last night I orderd a 16 GB version of the USB drive which was able to load Vail correctly.

Cleared the partitions and, re-formatted the OS drive by placing it in an open bay of my EX495 & using the WHS manage disk controls.

Any thoughts or a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

I'd say try another USB drive, also test the USB key on a PC to make sure it is capable of booting correctly.

I used an 8GB SanDisc USB key to load mine. Also used to the Win7 USB tool to make the USB key. I was using ISOs downloaded from technet site, but you should be able to use actual media as well.

EDIT: My WHS 2011 machine is DIY... so I didn't have the complexities of doing a blind install. Just clarifying.

No need to add a qs.ini file with the WHS 2011 Key code?

Not the qs.ini but the cfg.ini is needed. You don't need WHS key code since you have 30 days to enter the key and activate. Note that you have to have only the system drive in the server. You can add more drives when setup is completed. Here is what you should have in the cfg.ini file:

[WinPE]
ConfigDisk=1
CheckReqs=0
SystemPartitionSize=61440

[InitialConfiguration]
AcceptEula=true
ServerName=YourHomeServerName
PlainTextPassword=YourP@ssword
PasswordHint=YourPassHint
Settings=All

Hope this helps,

Claude

Thanks, Will try again once new USB drive gets here in a couple of days.

The line below is also in my cfg.ini file under [WinPE]
InstallSKU=SERVERHOMEPREMIUM
Should I remove it?

http://www.wegotserved.com/2008/04/30/t ... tall-disk/
Is the method above correct for building the install USB?
Windows 7 USB/DVD tool does not see the install diskett as an ISO file.

Regards
Chris

Gave up trying and ordered one of Cakalapati's MSS VGA cables.

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=8066

Ordered cable around 11PM, Recieved paypal invoice around 12AM and shipped notification around 12:30AM.
Talk about a fast turn around. :)

Of course i'm sure it didn't actually ship until after day break.

I expect it will be here tommorrow or Saturday at the latest.

I'll report back if I can narrow down the issue but, actually plan on using a USB DVD drive to install.

Yes, it was intended for Vail beta. All you need is the cfg.ini file with the lines I've posted. I know some people have hard a hard time installing it while some others installed it with no problem. You can also start the installation on a client computer and at the first reboot, you take the drive out and put it into your server. It should finish the installation from there.

Up and running using VGA cable and external DVD drive.

Could not tell were the hangup was but, was ask to enter WHS2011 key before software would load off of DVD.
