Now Vail has RTM'd and there are a number of companies working on a DE replacement, is anyone considering trying to get the LED service working on the mediasmarts?

There's been a fair bit of discussion on this in the beta forum:

viewtopic.php?f=27&t=10365
viewtopic.php?f=27&t=10524

To my knowledge no one has committed to working on it.

Hey Alex, I know there are already a few topics on the whole LED thing but I was wondering if you knew how the LEDs connect to the main board in the MSS. Are they USB or serial etc?

Not brave enough to rip mine open just yet...

But I have used a utility on my HTPC that can control leds via parallel or serial. I have it controlling 3 LEDs to show when my htpc is recording, time shifting and running low on HDD space. just wondering if it might be able to be coaxed into talking to the MSS LEDs.

Rgards,

Tommy

Something like this software might have potential?

The LEDs are on a separate PCB from the mainboard and are connected via a cable at the top of the server. I do not believe it is a standard USB or serial interface, I believe the driver interacts directly with GPIO, though I am no hardware engineer and could be wrong.

Hey yakuza, can you talk to your friends at HP and see if they would release an update or the source for the LEDs? That would be pretty kickass!

HP won't, I'm positive about that. :(

I can see their point of view, especially now that they don't offer WHS anymore, but not everything is about dollars and cents...I really wish sometimes these big corporations would do something slightly nice for their costumers...ohh well...considering it took them like two years to release V3 for WHS V1 EX7x and charging 30 bucks for it...I can't say I'm surprised.

I'm actually amazed they even released v3 for the older hardware.

we owe a lot of that to you and the members here...I think we bitched enough to get them to do something. Not to mention how some very smart people here proved it to HP that it was possible to do it...unlike their earlier stance. Ohh HP, you almost never fail to disappoint.

Hi All – just an observation regarding the LED’s on the Mediasmart. I have an ex490 and have installed the WHS2011 final on it last weekend, and of course had the blinking LED’s. However they are no longer blinking. The problem is I’m not sure when this may have changed as I have made a number of updates and changes in the default install and didn’t notice the blinking had stopped until this morning.

Recent changes I have made: Installed the SiS 3531 mass storage driver, installed the intel 64bit GMA 3100 video driver, enabled hybrid sleep, installed and configured lightsout, installed the cloudberry backup add-in, and configured a server backup.

After installing SpeedFan on the EX475 running WHS 2011 my health leds also stopped blinking. Seems the "scanning" done by SpeedFan did something. I'd like to take a shot at getting the LEDs working. Unfortunately my EX 475 is allready running WHS 2011 so I need someone with WHS 1 still running to send me some files. I'm particulary interested in all contents of C:\Program files\HP MediaSmart Server\ and C:\Program files\Hewlet Packard\ (if exists).

I'm not sure if this goes against the forum policy or not. I am a 475 EX owner and I have the Server Recovery Disc (3.0 upgrade 1). I'm just not able to use it just now.

As far as I know a 64-bit version of Windows should be able to load 32-bit drivers. I've tried modifying the wnas.inf file to make it run in WHS 2011. But it failes with a "driver is not intended for this platform" after first giving a warning about the driver being unsigned.

Anyone having any luck installing this driver? Or have any clues/hints to how we might get it installed without having source access to recompile it?

My understanding is that Server 2008 requires a signed driver, and I believe it will need to be recompiled for 64-bit.

I can see the remnants of the original build driver installation in the registry and that had the .cat signature file. I wonder if we can get hold of the complete original driver package that was in this folder??

HP should release it as it is a windows hardware driver for their hardware we brought from them. They have driver downloads for all other gear they sell. If we get the driver installed then it would be in a Microsoft OS so it is not harming the MS/HP combined effort in creating this MediaServer.

C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP MediaSmart Server\drivers\wnas\wnas.inf
C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP MediaSmart Server\drivers\wnas\wnas.cat
C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP MediaSmart Server\drivers\wnas\LEDBrightness.reg
C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP MediaSmart Server\drivers\wnas\wnas.sys

I have installed this driver with the oem9.inf on my EX470 with vanilla MS WHS 1 and it works fine... it just complained about the missing signature. Would be nice to have the certified driver
