Has anyone on the forum tried this AV product?

Pros/Cons about it?

Thanks,

K

Damian just installed it. I am waiting for his reply too as to how it works. This AV program has been around for a long time. I can install it on one of my servers and let you know how it works. I will try anything once if I feel its a good thing. ClamAV like I said has been around for a long time but I have not really seen much written about it.

I did install it. Yes its free and appears to run fairly quick but my first impressions is that its not a fully functional automated AV program. I will play with if for a few days but at this point lets just say I am not impressed with it but its better then nothing. The other thing is I am not certain if it does any scanning of new files added to the server or when files are being accessed. Just seems to be very basic.

Now I could be totally wrong but I am just offering up my first impressions of the software. Maybe others who have used it longer will have their opinions to offer up and maybe I am just missing something here.....I hope so....

The guys over at HomeServerShow.Com have fooled around with it. The good: free and works. Cons: only does scans when you request, there are no on-access scans yet.

I hope this helps you out!

I uninstalled Avast and installed WHSClamAV yesterday as well. I agree with your assessment. Now the big question though, do we really need a full fledged AV software on our WHS? Anything that goes on my WHS first goes through one of my PCs (which each has MS Security Essentials AV). The reason why I am trying alternatives to Avast is because I was using the family package which just expired and I believe Avast is no longer offering it anymore.

Damian--

IMHO, it really depends on what you run on the server. Do you have applications going out to the net to scrape metadata, or to download torrents, or just to perform downloads of software? If you do, I would submit that you need something.

I think that you said that only files that come from a protected client make it onto the server. Do you have any server-based applications that ping the net for updates? What about the new add-in that keeps track of add-in versions for you? That is going out to the net, and if the target site is compromised, you are exposed. Just look at what happeded to HomeServerShow.Com a few weeks back!

I admit to paranoia about this stuff, but I have spent too much time rebuilding systems for buddies who insist on surfing with nothing protecting them. I don't have the time to waste rebuilding the server or any other machine for that matter. $40 is not too much to pay to get some comfort.

I run Mcafee on my 475, but really don't like it, and am looking at Avast when my subscription expires. If ClamAV ever gets to the point where it is full-featured, free and works well, I'll probably use it.

Just my 2 cents.

Jim

That is actually the only issue, as my WHS does grab metadata automatcially. The thought would be to just have the AV software on my desktop PC monitor the shared folder. I have to give it some thought in the long run.

Yea, I think that would work. It really all depends on your risk tolerance in my opinion.

How is MSE working for you? I had that on my sandbox laptop for awhile and it missed some nasty surprises that Norton nailed when I reinstalled.

So far MSE has been working fine, I have been running with it for about a month since my AVAST license expired with no issues (that I know of!!!)

It sounds to me that nothing "free" is really ready for prime time yet, doesn't it?

It depends. For instance Avast does offer a Free AV program as well that I have installed on my Mom's PC without issue.

But, as I understand Avast...it is manual...is that right? or at least there seems to be some dissatisfaction with it?

It was never manual for me. The only reason why I am looking for alternatives from Avast is because they got rid of the family package pricing that I was using (it would cost me a lot7 more now with 1 WHS and 5 PCs)

Avast for WHS is free though?

I use AntiVir on the PC side which I have no complaints about.

No, I meant Avast on the PC side is free. In the past I think the family package gave you 1 WHS license and 10 PC licenses for something like $70
