I have has the 120 Day WHS Evaluation Software for every it seems. I installed it in an HP Prolient DL145 G2. Installation went well.

My question is can I purchase a license and just fully activate the Evaluation Copy or do I have to purchase the OEM Copy and reinstall? I think I have to purchase the OEM Copy and reinstall but I just need to confirm this to be true or not. I really do not want to get to deep into it and then have to start over. If I have to start over then I will obtain the OEM Copy soon.

Thanks in advance.....

They did away with the 120 day eval and it's now a 30 day eval that you can license without a re-install.

Yesterday I was on the Proliant looking to find where I could change the evaluation to a purchased license but for the life of me I could not find it. All I could find was the Activation which only activate the evaluation license.

So the question is how do you go about changing the licence? I have no issues with ordering the OEM version and doing a reinstall of WHS I just do not desire to migrate my data to the Proliant before I have a full licence to use it.

Thanks in Advance....

DId you install the 120 day eval? That one you could not license and must perform a re-install.

Yes I installed the 120 day Evaluation Copy MS sent me like 2 yrs ago. I really needed to see if I could install the software and get it working on an HP Proliant DL145 G2 and it installed perfectly with exception to 2 drivers I had to hunt down but its working and its magnificantly fast. I will order a copy of WHS tonight so I will have it this week so that I can start performing my data migration next weekend.

If you have 120 days on it then maybe you should wait for Vail before plunking down the the cash. Now if on the other hand they said you would get a Vail license on release I would gladly advise you to spend the cash now. It's time to the pre-sell the software since the beans have been spilled. They could allow you use of the current WHS until the release.

sxr71,

Thanks or the suggestion. No one really knows when Vail will be released. The WHS software is very reasonably priced for what you get and if tomorrow Vail were made available for purchase I would not be upset about it. I just wished they would of allowed me to enter a new Key to keep what I installed on my server running first but then the install doesn't really take all that long anyway.

I hate to say it but there is a way if you trust the server reinstallation process, You can use the 30-day PP3 trial and keep using it if you know what I mean. I had a friend try it and it works. I myself am on the 120-day trial which for some reason has an expiration of May 2010 or about 6 months. I called Microsoft with my key which I got from MS Connect and I needed to reinstall after a BIOS date change episode. The person on the line gave me an activation code which activated it for about 6 months. Maybe I got lucky. Of course I will purchase Vail when it is released.

WOW 6 months is great! Thing is can you convert the licence now? I installed the 120 evaluation just to veryify the ProLiant was functional and would work. I then purchased a copy of WHS and reinstalled it no problem at all. It did not take me very long to migrate my data and drives to the ProLiant. Since then I have upgraded the processors and am waiting on the 6 GB RAM to arrive from 2 venders. So when the RAM arrives I will have 4 GB for one processor and 3 GB for the other. The Processors are AMD Optron 280 which are 2.4 GHZ duel core processors.

Well, I've gained a reasonable amount of trust in the server reinstallation process. But really I am hoping that Vail is released by then and I hope it has a good migration process. I am anticipating that it will. All it has to do is generate the tombstones as the current WHS reinstallation process does. But since the PP3 trial works without keys, I could use that for another 30 days. And well another and another. If you catch my drift. But the sooner Vail is released the sooner I'll get off that wagon.

When vail comes out I hope and pray the migration process will be smooth or I will be the crying forever and ever.
