So Im sure this doesnt belong her but since it is a appication in going to install on my WHS and this is a spin off of my Webguide 4 topic.

I have ran into issues streaming mp4 with webguide 4 and streaming on iPhone. I have a question about functionality. With webguide 4 you have access over who can access it, Does Orb restrict access also? Has anyone installed and set up this and the iPhone app?

I had Orb running on my server but found it to be temperamental and installed it on my desktop instead. The iphone app works really well but the sharing feature is pretty basic, so you either share publicly or not.

Do I use the custom domain I set up with TZO to access the features or a special Orb config. Also what issues or problems did it have on the server?

It uses http://mycast.orb.com/. You then just logon with your user name and it connects to your machine.

When I had it on the server, the service would just terminate sporadically which was a pain, but since running it on Win7 it hasnt dropped at all. The US version is different to the UK one so you may have more luck. To be honest it used to run fine it's only the current version I had problems with and I wouldnt rule out a config issue at my end with the ammount of playing I've done on that server!

Thats cool, thanks for all the info Cougar. its a little disappointing that I have to use someone elses servers to get access to my content. I know its meant as a pointer but its the deal that I have to rely on someone else. I guess this is another reason to make the leap to a ex495 so that I can use the HP iPhone app. Have you by any chance tried their official app? how does it compare to Orb or webguides 4's offering?

So I installed the Orb software last night, Very Slick stuff. I also got the Orb Media iPhone app (4.99 version with out TV live), Since I dont have a tv tuner in the server I went with the cheaper app. I like how you can adjust quality based on your situation. The scaling ability based on your connectivity situation is kinda cool. This definitely needs to be added to the official HP mediasmart app. this would reduce the need to use the converter to make a mobile version of videos when converting I would think. I have tried streaming any large files yet. I just did a tv episode about 200-300mb in size. The major draw back for me still is the need to rely on someone else. I mean I have a server and I have a domain why do I need to log onto Orbs site?? I also dont like that they can track the things I stream from my server (Just dont like nose people haha).

It's a little strange having to go via mycast but I've been using it since before I used the WHS so I kind of got used to it. There are some good features to it; and I like the way that it will accept UNC names so I can still keep my data on the server but host the app on the desktop. Maybe I will try it on the server now there is a new version out.
