Did a complete reinstall of Server 10.04 and installed the Ubuntu desktop. I was able to remote in with VNC. The new problem is the MSS randomly shuts down. When I try and restart it it just shuts off again.

Hey guys,

I got sick of waiting for an official fix for sis190/191 driver to be fixed so I rolled back my metaphorical sleeves and fixed a part of it.
It still doesn't support some of the cooler features (cs/tso offloading, vlan) but at least it doesn't hang anymore when I use it.
I'm planning to work on it some more to add the cool features, but no guarantees when :)

If anyone wants to try it out, let me know.

I have also installed Ubuntu 10.04 desktop. It runs fine and dosen't shut down on its own accord. However, there is an issue with the sis 190/191 driver. I can put the original HDD in the EX470 (with Windows 2003 Server, as original) and the ethernet works fine. I am at present using a D-Link USB Ethernet module and that is working ok but i would still like to use the internal modem if possible. I haven't worked out as to how i remove the driver and reinstall it to see if that is the problem. I am serving a Flashchat chatroom with Adobe Flash Server v3.5.3, Apache v2.2, PHP v5, PHPMyAdmin and MySQL v5, all working like a dream.

Guess nobody wants to try it out.
Everyone other than me must be happy with the USB workaround :|

A follow up to my last post. I figured that due to a bios setting "Load failsafe settings" was a good idea, apparently it was'nt. I reloaded Ubuntu 10.04 using "Load optimum settings" and it installed like a dream :). Everything working ok. Now the only thing i need to sort out is getting the HDD lights going. Not a big deal but i see in another topic http://www.mediasmartserver.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7720&p=69254#p69254 some code has been produced for that type of server. As Ubuntu is based on the Debian core, can anyone clarify wheather this is compatable with the system i am running or not ?

I may have done a very bad thing - I accidentally blew away the ntfs flash disk when formatting my new 2TB drive in Ubuntu (the drives enumerated to different names on a reboot and I failed to make sure I was formatting the right one, doh!). The system is still up and running, but I'm afraid that if I reboot, it won't boot anymore. Can anyone confirm that this flash disk isn't needed for Ubuntu to boot properly?

update: I formatted the flash disk to ntfs and went for - still works! :D

OKay!!! I have Ubuntu 10.04 Server working! Installed Webmin. and Im moving some files to it right now. For the moment Im going to use it as a video server. I dont have the VNC working but the ssh and Webmin work.

Here is a silly question, how can I see if the flash drive image is intact?

blue: in linux it shows up as the last /dev/sdX. I have 4 HDDs, so it shows up as /dev/sde for me. Here's the fdisk info:

Code:
Disk /dev/sde: 259 MB, 259522560 bytes
16 heads, 32 sectors/track, 990 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 512 * 512 = 262144 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x336a390c

Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
/dev/sde1   *           1         986      252400    7  HPFS/NTFS

Thanks for that.

Here is silly question # 2.

The machine boots just fine with only the file system HD installed. If I add a second drive Im not sure if it boots because I cant connect to the system to do anything. Am I missing something here?

yeah, a VGA cable :)

No idea, sorry. I made myself a VGA cable ASAP so I wouldn't have to deal with problems like that.
All I know is that it tries to boot from the bottom drive - maybe that would help

Any luck on getting GBLan speeds ?
I'm considering a Fedora 14 + AMAHI install, but i rather stick with MS stuff ( :x ) than significantly lose performance.

Thanks in advance

gigabit lan works perfectly fine, but only with my own patched driver (which I keep planning to clean up and push to kernel tree...)
Using Fedora 14, actually

I am having the same problem...
1. put hd into pc and installed ubuntu server
2. put hd into MSS and changed eth0 to be the MSS NIC by default
3. I shut down and put in another hard drive in slot 2 (ex4, new format and no data)
4. I boot up and nothing happens... I attach a keyboard and hit enter a couple times incase of a bios/grub prompt -nothing
5. I have to 4 second hold power button to shut down, remove disk from slot 2, start MSS, then after about 30 seconds, hit 'return' on the keyboard I have connected and the slot 1 disk starts to read. A few seconds later I am able to SSH to the MSS.

Im I missing somthing? Are my drives supposed to be a different format? Logical instead of physical? Do I need to load in SATA drivers first in order for a successful boot? If so how can I find out what drivers I need to get? I do not see my drive come up when I use lspci or when I use df.
