Its a full gnu-linux distro, including latest Desktops, with constant updating.
However, its not very user-friendly: i.e. text-install, some config files editing, and no graphical environment by default.

Basically you have to start from a minimalistic install, then add wanted packages.
Nothing impossible, but requires an average Linux knowledge.

Online help is very good. Package manager (pacman) is awesome!

Just got my EX470!! I didn't even bother with WHS, installed Ubuntu Server 9.10 x64 right away. I have a USB ethernet adapter for backup. The onboard gigabit seems to configure ok, but performance is very very spotty. For instance, I can't always ssh into the box. When I do, the login process seems to hang for a while. Connection to the internet seems laggy. If I try to ping somewhere on the internet, some pings work fine and then there will be long pauses where no pings make it. This also makes using apt-get difficult sometimes. Any ideas why the networking is so laggy? I was hoping it would work perfectly with the kernel in 9.10.

FWIW; I am using Ubuntu 9.10 (32Bit as the 64Bit is still very buggy) with Gnome desktop. No problems with the speed on the SiS190. However, you can try adding 1492 to the MTU in the eth0 settings instead of the automatic setting. This seemed to help with incresed speed and connections in some cases.

The MTU change did not seem to help, thanks for the suggestion though. Pinging my gateway is always 100% successful, pinging anything else on my local network or the internet results in massive ping loss, and sometimes my ssh session even drops. I did find something suspicious when doing an ifconfig - does anyone else have a Base address of 0xdead?

Code:
# ifconfig eth3
eth3      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:0a:e4:88:cf:72
          inet addr:192.168.1.114  Bcast:192.168.1.255  Mask:255.255.255.0
          inet6 addr: fe80::20a:e4ff:fe88:cf72/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:1492  Metric:1
          RX packets:119154 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:24737 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:66744166 (66.7 MB)  TX bytes:1821971 (1.8 MB)
          Interrupt:19 Base address:0xdead

EDIT: I've been messing with it and it looks like I may have a DNS problem (and maybe the MTU change did fix other problems.) I disabled DNS reverse lookups for sshd, and now ssh connections to the box work fine. Pinging internal addresses also works. Pinging website names, however, results in packet losses because it appears that the names never resolve, or resolve extraordinarily slowly. Once I can get the names to resolve, it pings those names ok.

Here is my ifconfig of eth0:

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0a:e4:86:7d:52
inet addr:192.168.1.100 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::20a:e4ff:fe86:7d52/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1492 Metric:1
RX packets:4117 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:3974 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:263916 (263.9 KB) TX bytes:5218665 (5.2 MB)
Interrupt:19 Base address:0xdead

As you can see, the base address is the same..... Try using the 32Bit distro, as the 64Bit is shakey. Also; i have allowed the ip address to be a DMZ in my router, obviously with the firewall installed and configured on the WHS. That may also help with pinging etc.

Hi everyone,

I just installed Fedora 12 (LXDE LiveCD x64 beta, to be released in ~10 days) on my ex470, swapping the drive to a different machine as suggested on http://samuel.thollander.net/projects/linux-on-hp-ex470

There are some issues to work out, but mostly fedora-related:
* selinux needed to be turned off or liveCD doesn't boot
* sshd is turned off by default after install & network card wasn't initialized properly because original install was on different hardware - with a self-made video cable that got worked out
* boot time is a bit too long for comfort (kernel freezes for a while on SATA drives & elsewhere)

According to url above, network doesn't work right away. That's not the case here - it loaded sis190 driver by itself and after fixing a config glitch. Works well in 100mbps mode (didn't test in gigabit yet, mainly because i don't have a gigabit switch yet :P)
Sata_sis loads for the drives - I still haven't tested if all slots work. The driver mentions that it's in "raid" mode, however. The only other BIOS setting that works is 4IDE+4IDE. I've tried all 2+2 settings and they all cause F12 to fail loading. Blacklisting sata_sis does nothing. I'm not sure how to load AHCI driver instead, though also not sure if it's necessary.

Hi all,

I just bought the EX490 from Newegg and opened it up. Nice little machine but definitely lacking in customization abilities. Immediately looked at getting Linux on it and stumbled upon this forum :D

I realize this thread is devoted to the EX470, but can I follow the same instructions for the EX490? I'm a fairly sophisticated Linux user, but with all the nuances of this particular device, I just want to make sure I'm doing everything right as I do not have the VGA cable.

I plan on using Archlinux 64bit.

Welcome to the world of MSS/WHS! Good to have you aboard, especially if you are going to play in the Linux part of this world!

I have not heard of anyone successfully getting Linux working on an EX49x machine but I wouldn't let that stop you! Feel free to be the first.

(I would suggest starting a new thread tho as this has the "EX470" in the title.)

Hi scrabble. I think you maybe better off using the EX490 for Linux. It may have a better hardware arrangement than the EX470. As long as you use another (spare) hard drive to set it up on (not overwriting the original OS) for testing purposes i would say, give it a go !!

Thanks for the quick replies to both of you :)

Once I get around to buying another 1TB drive, I'll test it on there. I'll document my adventure that's for sure and post about it in a new thread. Hopefully there are some solid deals on drives in the coming week.

In the meantime, I'll take a closer look at the hardware to ensure that the Linux kernel supports it.

Lucid works on EX470!

I just havent been able to do anything with it. I can VNC into it locally but not remotely. If I knew the command line stuff Im sure I could do more with it. I may just leave it as a local server and use my Acer Apire as my gateway.

You can VNC into it remotely by adding port 5900 to your Windows firewall and then the router firewall. Better still, if you use DMZ for what ever your server is (192.168.1.100) in the routers settings, that will solve your problem. Bearing in mind, you best use a firewall on your server. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04, that has "Firestarter" as its firewall.

I may be missing something here, Im kinda drunk too. Im not running Windows on anything, 2 desktops 2 servers, no Windows, Ubuntu 10.04. 5900 is allready added on the main router, and works with my DIY Acer Aspire Ubuntu server.

5900 is the default VNC port and if you've already got it forwarded to one server, then on the other (new) server you'll need to run VNC on another port and then forward that port on the router.

Im not overly concerned about remoting in from outside of my network to the MSS, I can forward ports later on. However when Im home I would like to be able to see what Im doing on there. Locally I can use the Remote Desktop Viewer to SSH into the MSS but not VNC. VNC works when the HD is in the computer I set it up on but not when it is in the MSS. Any idea what Im missing?
