Hi,

Is it OK or not to disable the "indexing service" via the RDC ?
Is indexing used by any WHS application ?

Thanks !

To the best of my knowledge the indexing is only to support faster searching, so I don't believe there is any problem with disabling it. Having said that, I'd ask why you feel the need to disable the service, is it causing some behavior you don't like?

Thanks for your answer Alex.
I have always turned off indexing service on my desktops/notebooks because it slowed down the system while indexing (uses a lot of CPU and memory) for a non relevant result, IMHO.
So I'll turn it off on my MSS too :)

In order to reclaim the space (4GB) that my index was taking on my C: drive I decided to move the index to the storage within my user folder. Now all I get is that there isn't enough disk space to continue indexing despite the fact that there is ample disk space and no drive is within 10GB of being full. In fact my most filled drive has more than 180GB free.

The surprising thing is that the "index" folder I designated is exactly the same size as the one on my C: drive. the space has not been reclaimed.

What's going on with it? Any ideas?

Is it best to do this for all drives or just the C:\ drive?

If you want your Shared Folders to appear in Windows 7/8 Libraries, they must be indexed on the server.

For example if your using Windows 8 and want your videos to show up in the Videos Metro app, your videos shared folder must be included in the Videos Library. For them to be included in the Library, they must be indexed on the server. :encore:

I don't have an answer accept to say maybe its not compatible with DE. A while back I ran into an issue with Perfect Disk and the indexing files so I relocated the location of the index files from C to an unmanaged drive in the server to correct he issue with Perfect Disk which is a totally different issue but the similarity was with relocating where WHS stored the index file information.

I normally always shut it off just to free up a little resources, kind of like turning off wireless on a desktop that does not have wifi.
I have not seen any problems with it, now if I can't see stuff in win7 or 8 that would cause me to turn it back on, but haven't seen anything yet. I'm just getting all my clients up to 7. Have one 8 to do when I get time.
Good thoughts.
Thx
