Besides that add on that I have seen posted on the site. I was wondering what Programs you are actually running on your MSS.

2003 Server?
2008 Server?
Exchange Server?
Twonky/Tversity
or what have you.

are you finding having that on your system useful at all? Would you do something diffrent next time? what prompted you to choose this install path?

Well, having just done a factory reset on my system, the only thing going back on as far as third party apps, is Squeezecenter. That is essential. The only add-in I plan to put back is the WHS toolkit. I had installed some others before to check out, but really never used them.

I was looking around and I read because exchange 2007 is a 64bit application it wont run on the MSS. Im sure I read that someone got it running but not sure how. I know the MSS has a 64bit chip so....

anyway I found this:

http://www.smartertools.com/

it is a email server free version the only limit of the free version is that you only can set up 10 users. exactly the number of users the MSS supports.

Hmmm. That looks very interesting. I may be tempted to give it a go. Has anyone tried this out yet? Let me know if you installed it tbone, curious to see how it works.

I'm using SmarterTools' SmarterMail mail server program on my WHS (MSS) and it works great! The web mail interface is totally awesome. It allows me to use my e-mail from anywhere in the world where I have access to a web browser.

Currently I'm using it as a POP3 mail collector/agregator only (instead of as a true mail server). Basically, SmarterMail grabs all of the e-mail from my POP e-mail accounts and then stores it on the MSS. I then have full access to all of the collected e-mail using the program's web interface or through an IMAP/POP3 connection via my mail reader program (I use Microsoft Outlook).

The whole thing is setup so that I have secure access (using the free GoDaddy-based SSL cert that comes with WHS) to all my e-mail via both the web mail interface (using HTTPS) and the IMAP/POP3 connection (using SSL/TLS).

Best of all is that it's FREE. Most other mail server programs run in the $100's to $1,000 and aren't nearly as good.

If you run into any snags setting it up just let me know and I'll do my best to walk you through it.

I run Exchange 2007 on 32-bit WIndows 2003 R2. MS doesn't support 32-bit Exchange, but it works OK for me. just run the 64-bit installer & it will install the 32-bit version. It should continue to work after the 120 days it warns about when you run the console.

Cougar,

I thought I remembered you stating that you have a non pooled drive you run all your applications from. I was wondering how that is working for you. Did you have to give that drive any special permissions to set it up? I am thinking about moving more this route as Im starting to fish out the primary uses of my server.

I do, and I don't have a problem with it at all. I didn't do anything special with the drive, just added it, formatted it and run some apps on there, mainly Gallery 2 and some other databases. I didn't like the idea of running databases on a DE drive, I'd say HP didnt as they run it off C for Webshare and there is a backup script that copies the folder to one of the { DE folders.
I borrowed this idea, and added to the script as well to duplicate some of the stuff on my "app drive"

I was thinking about doing something like this to run mail server and itunes for now.

Have you had to reinstall since installing applications on a sub drive? how do you reset up the application pointers? is it just a matter of putting the short cut to the *.EXE files in the programs list?

I've reinstalled once, and restored a Windows Backup onto the machine including system state (same drive). I wouldn't dream of doing that (again) on a different drive, so will have to just reinstall any apps and import any data, repoint db's as needed.

So aside from not feeling comfortable about Database info being on a DE drive there isnt any reason to have a seperate drive for applications. Since it is a pain to reinstall anyhow.

Just space considerations on C that's all.
