Alex,
since you seem to have THE insight into HP, tell me one more thing: How do you sort through the directory tree at ftp.hp.com? This is just as cryptic as their support site. Is there a secret for the navigation?

Thanks,
rev

You don't sort through the tree, that would be at worst impossible and at best boring. I found the URL contained in the .pckg file which contains a lot of meta data about the update, but this is only available after you've already downloaded it so wouldn't help you.

Alex: Thought for your next Add-In... Have a graph of all the (6) temperatures available through SpeedFan plus each attached disk. Along with that overlay the fan speeds and CPU usage. In a setup screen let the user decide which ones to plot or ignore. Come on, you can do it! I'll beta test it!

I don't know how Speedfan does what it does as the sensors are hardware specific. AFAIK the MB vendor has to provide the means of accessing the sensor. I researched this quite a bit last year and didn't find anything on how to read a sensor other than vendor related stuff. The attached disk temps I don't know about but the fan speeds and CPU usage is quite doable.

Hey guys, I did some more digging and found that HP has delivered the signed SSL cert in this update that ships with the EX485 and EX487. This is nice news and shows HP's continued support of the current MediaSmart Server customer base.

You can read the full details in my latest blog post.

Alex, I've always wondered... why would someone use the TZO domain feature? What does it do that the standard Microsoft one does not?

Thanks!

EDIT: Nevermind, I just saw the thread about TZO renewals which seems to have the info... doesn't sound like anything I'd woory about. Thanks

Just an update for the folks that are wondering how to get this new update to add the SSL Certificates.
We have just posted some detailed info on the SSL Certificates, and what the differences are with the multi-level Certification

You can GO TO TZO WEBSITE to read the updated info page on the new SSL Certificates in the 1st and 2nd generation MediaSmart servers
http://www.tzo.com/MainPageSupport/HowToPage/HowToHPMediaSmartServer-SSL-Tips.html

Some benefits over the Godaddy/HomeServer.com Certificates are the multi-level, so you can connect SECURELY via SSL using both INTERNAL and External connections. The MS/Godaddy cert only supports a single domain, the new HP Certificates provided by TZO and Comodo are multi-level,which means you can connect securely via the following names at the bottom of this post. See the TZO Site using the link above for more infomation, screenshots of the multi-level cert and more.

TZO also does SSL forwarding for HP on the domain name itself, allowing you access without having to remember to include the HTTPS in your browser. It does this automatically. Other benefits to the TZO solutions are Free Phone and Email Support, and the ability to get a custom domain name such as YourName.com using the HP Custom domain powered by TZO. TZO also does email notification (SMTP relay) for first Generation mediasmart servers using Webshare and most importantly, the TZO DNS infrastructure to handle super fast and reliable DNS and Dynamic DNS.

\\LOCALHOST - (When connecting on the server itself)
\\HPSERVER - (this is the default NetBios Name of the newer MediaSmart servers when connecting locally over the network

YourDomain.__AnHPOfferedDomain______.com/.net (used for remotely connecting, SSL forwarding enabled at TZO)
http://www.YourDomain.__AnHPOfferedDoma ... _.com/.net

Any questions, feel free to contact TZO Support

Alex,
in the danger of this being off topic here, just curious: where are the .pckg files stored and how do you unpack them? (Feel free to move this to a new thread if you wish.)

When I open them with Notepad they are all "goobleygook", unreadable...

So for clarifications sake what is the software update we older 47 owners can be expect to see once the 48er's are out? Anything besides the Mac backup feature or is that about it?

I understand that the on-line backup and the MAC support is coming for us but nothing much known beyond that.

(PLEASE let's not get off-topic on that here. It's got to be in 10++ threads at this point! And I am NOT complaining about your post, jshollis!)

Hey Gang!

My HP-WHS is killing me...

I was able to pull down the update today, and I tried to install from the console like all
good updates should be done, but I got an error (my luck happened again) here is a screen
shot of the error.

Image

So i went to the provided link and tried a manual install, same error.
I went and tried the windows installer (4.5) update, same error
I went and tried the MSI cleanup utility, same error
I yelled at it, same error
I tried to remove all the temp files (system wide), same error
Please help me.

I don’t know how to fix this, and if I have to re-do this server again, I am going to
launch it into a busy street.

I've gotta ask, Tony, have you restarted the server and tried the "Check for Updates" after the restart?

Alex,
thanks, for the info on the pckg files. The information is loud and clear in the files. Searching for ftp.hp.com helps with the gooblygook obscurity.

Yeah, there's a lot of garbage in the files to filter through. If I was on my linux box I'd do a 'strings' command to extract the good bits, but Notepad works if you are able to visually filter out the noise. Things stand out to me, like long strings, and anything .exe or .msi.

Tony, have you done any customizations to the MSS? For example, changed the ports that it is running on, manually run Windows Update, installed new .NET versions, etc?

The update worked fine for me. It did turn on the iTunes server though, I had to re-disable it.

The update worked for me but I started getting an error about the client info addin and the cosole said it was preventing it from starting. So I had to uninstall it. The same thing happend with the Grid Junction Add IN when I had a Mcaffee hotfix installed. I don't use the client info addin so I didn't mind uninstalling it.
