With WHS being discontinued by Microsoft years ago I've been on the hunt for a replacement.
I have recently ran across two options, that are both based off of Ubuntu Server.

Ansible NAS
https://davidstephens.uk/2019/01/02/an-update-on-ansible-nas/

HomeLabOS
https://gitlab.com/NickBusey/HomelabOS

Looks like they are using docker to add in custom packages.

I'm new to the Ubuntu/ docker side of things.

Thoughts?

As noted by @lasoccerjj

You could also run Synology DSM 6.1.6 with the help of a Xpenology USB bootloader on an MSS. Some say that's superior to Ubuntu Server.

Use is seamless with the exception of when you boot. You can't have the lowest bay's SATA port in use when booting. And you have to have the USB bootloader thumb drive installed to have something to boot from. DSM supports hot swap so you can slide a hard drive back in that lowest bay once your up. But it's been said you should avoid upgrading to a newer DSM version unless you've read up on the Xpenology forums and test first.

As I mentioned in another of your posts, I'm still stuck on v1 and even though it's "obsolete", still have no issues with it at all. For file serving & maintaining client backups it's plenty fast enough for me. I just really like the client backup ability of the WHS v1 (and Vail) versions. They are so cheap to come by these days that the freeware open source stuff doesn't really add much value. I'm not remoting in to the server thru the internet or browsing using the MSS either. So I'm not much worried about the SMB1 issue there is with v1 until MS fully kills it off in some (near???) future w10 update.

When that happens I'll just use an old XP laptop I have lying around, grab some new drives, load in Vail, use WSUS off-line to fully update it, move the data over, and I'll be back in business. Or if I'm feeling frisky, update sometime next year to stay ahead of MS. There are still so many reasons MS can't fully kill off SMB1 quite yet, I've still got time. But after all OS prior to w8 go out of support, I'm sure they will be looking hard for the hammer to drive in the last death nail on SMB1.

They say Vail is faster than v1 with SE16 & SE19 much improved over Vail. My guess would be with a processor upgrade like I'm already running, Vail will be fine for HD video serving since there's no Drive Extender moving files around to sap recourses.

I have been using the readynas rn-316 for a couple years for replacement of my ex490, Which I still use for redundant backups.
But I am ready to discontinue the ex490.

Here is a link to some feature videos.
https://www.netgear.com/business/produc ... turevideos

Feature specs:
http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/ ... -RN700.pdf

I don't care for the backup app so I use easus to do on the clients and store them on readynas.
Only caveat I found is bay two from the top is the redundant drive bay.
So from the start I suggest to use at least a 3-4tb or larger drive.
You can mix and max drive sizes on it but you don't get much more storage till all the drives are of equal size or larger.
Currently I have 4- 4tb wd reds. I am adding a 4th 5th wd red today.
It also has a esata port They list a expansion module for more drive bays but good luck finding one.
But I tested a RaidTower 5 bay I have and it works fine.

I was asking about a new OS.

The links should go to an OS.
Ansible Nas is the name of the OS.
https://github.com/davestephens/ansible-nas

HomelabOS is another OS that I found.
https://gitlab.com/NickBusey/HomelabOS

They both are based of of Ubuntu server. I didn't know if anyone had messed with them.
