I got my Ex490 working now and still have whs v1 on it and like the os. Question is backing up windows 10 machines. I have read not a problem backing up but can't restore them properly. I could just use something like Acronis or there are free versions if it won't back up with v1 of software. I have one running whs 2011 and it's doing fine but don't want to try and find another key which will probably hard to find a legit one anyway. Any advice appreciated. |

I do not and will not have a win10 client to test, but have heard that backing up a win10 pc can be a problem because of all the partitions win10 creates. I made a mistake of not backing up the system partition on my win7 pc's and when I went to restore one it wouldn't boot. I was able to create the system partition and fix it, but then went and reconfigured all my clients backups to include the system partition. I can't say for sure how to configure win10 so it would work later, but if it was me, I would backup all partitions and that way you could fiddle with which ones you really need. Someone who has done a win10 may have a better answer for ya, good luck. P.S. I don't really count on the backups for a full recovery as I have had 50/50 luck on recovery, I use them more for a "just in case" file recover. I keep images of all the clients and tell them to keep all there files on the server. |

I do have win 10 on all my clients. Using a ex490 and whs1 The very first hurdle is uefi boot file. When you use the cd it ignores the uefi so when prompted for a usb drive for your nic driver you don't have a usb port. There is a way to disable uefi in the bios by turning off protected mode to enable the usb ports. But then problem 2 comes up. Where to find a driver for your nic card unless you have a old nic for say windows xp with drivers to copy from which I do. But a legacy nic will work with the default drivers on the cd. If you find a driver for a newer card it is a exe file that needs to be run on a working machine. Good luck finding one that will work. Because it only extracts say a driver for win10. If you can get by those issues then comes: Problem three. You will need to use the advanced option on the hp cd for recovery. Then remap each partition back to the c drive. Whs has a backup of each partition including hidden ones but it will make a c:,D:,E:f: etc drives So you need to set each one up to be hidden without a drive letter. Then comes the issue of why you are running a client recovery. Is the os hosed or is it just data. If it is the os then how do you know when it was not hosed it could have happened a little at a time. Till it did not boot correctly. If it is data then just open the backup and copy over the data files. I prefer to use the original os apps cd's install everything fresh. The I know everything is up to snuff on the os. Then just copy over the backup data files. |

Just a little more info on win10 backups. Since I see additional topics talking about it. I have tried easeus. http://www.easeus.com They have a free version not trial. You install it on the client. It works on win 10,8,7 and xp It has a option to create a pxe recovery disk for each client. You can schedule the backups. You can configure what type of backups you want full,image,incremental. You can select the backup destination. You can create a disk clone to migrate to a ssd. Other features are available for paid versions. So you could create a folder on the server turn on duplication. Then point to the server folder for your backup location. Of course you would want to turn off backups to the client on the hp server so you don't waste drive space. |
