Well first item:
There is no such thing as a EX496.
But anyway what are you looking for features that whsv1 does not provide.

Okay 495.
Well first question is what are you looking for that the current OS does not give you.
In case you are not aware linux is mostly command line interface.
There are some GUI add ons.
Meaning you will need to use a remote desktop connection.
And learn all the commands.

You say "I find WHS v1 a bit slow" but you also say you don't have movies on it. What is slow about it?

Upgrading the OS will not speedup the system, you are kind of limited by the hardware, which you can upgrade.
All of my servers have had the cpu and ram upgraded.

To each his own, but the main reason I stay with whs v1 is because it works, all my PC's are Vista or win7 and it does everything I ask, including streaming movies. (I use serviio and uninstalled Twonky)

I have installed whs 2011, even have a couple of copies of it, I have installed win2012 Essentials but I keep coming back to whs v1 cause it just works.
Yes the console is a little slow and the first time you backup a pc it takes awhile, but how often are we in the console and if you keep all your files on the server and keep the pc drives unloaded then backups are not that bad.

The main thing I like about a windows OS is you can pull the drives and get your data if all else fails, other os'es and system can't say that.
Hope this helps.
Now at some point whs v1 will not work anymore and that time is getting closer. I have a home built Win2012E server that I play with for down the road, but as long as whs v1 keeps working, I will keep running it. I might even try whs 2011 when the time comes, I have the VGA cables.
Good Luck
P.S. You can remote desktop into it and run the disk cleanup and defrag (just the C drive) that will help speed it up a bit, I do this a few times a year. I also use ccleaner, but ya got to be careful playing with the os (disclaimer)

I wouldn't worry about the ram unless you are ripping on the server. I have checked my server's and they are lucky to be using half of the factory 2 gig.
That cpu is the big gun, it will run hot, I found the E8600 is the sweet spot on cpu.
Check the 490-495 hardware thread, you should find the memory there. You may have to get it from ebay as it's kind of old....
Good luck
