Making headway now, I think the best option with ISP is to turn westell it into a bridge? and let cisco carry the load, but will check on options, I did notice that I had disabled the port forwards on the cisco some time ago when I turned off remote access to my security system. I tried turning back on for whs access, no joy, then went to Westell looking for "Zone transfer" options (per error message with NSlookup). also tried re-resolving link to Cisco from Westell (westell port forwards). After these manipulations, I WAS ABLE TO CONNECT TO CONTROL CENTER USING HTTPS VERSUS HTTP! (see attached pix), this https technique with Cert error used to work for me some time ago, but quit working, now is working again, I have backed out all changes and it still works... not sure why...

The connect scenario works like this; Double click on Control center desktop icon installed by connector, get http400 error, change URL to HTTPS, get the cert error and the "do you really want to connect", I say yes and get the control center blackscreen (JOY!) with mismatch error artifact...

I can't find any WHS options for HTTPS vs http, attached cert error info as well...

If you entered the actual server name rather then your domain name you will get that error. HP uses Port 443 for its server webpages. Your server does have the default WHSv1 landing page which will work with HTTP if you end the link with a /home as this uses Port 80.

I had a similar situation with my isp.
They changed out my cable modem with a cable modem/router.
My isp was 192.168.0.1 arris router
My router was 192.168.10.1 trendnet router
I was not given access to my isp's router
Of course dhcp was turned on on both routers.(bad thing)
So my isp bridged there router to me turned off dhcp and all was well again.

Thanx Guys, sorry have been tied up with "do List"

Ruben, agree, I have not attempted changing isp router to bridge, but agree that's likely long term right thing to do to address dual nat artifacts (complexities of configuring multiple router paths for things like security systems).

But I still want to try and understand apparent name/cert errors..

Comp, I need help to understand your "If you entered the actual server name rather then your domain name you will get that error. HP uses Port 443 for its server webpages. Your server does have the default WHSv1 landing page which will work with HTTP if you end the link with a /home as this uses Port 80".

I am using the my server name "HPhomeserver" from my local network. When I add the /home (HPhomeserver/home), I get the same http400 error. I can add the s (https://hphomeserver/home/) and then get the security error which I can continue thru and get to the correct control center home page (There is a problem with this website's security certificate).

It seems like my Server security certificate is faulty? or requiring a secure connection only? I can't seem to bring up the Cert Store on my WHS win2003 box (can't snap addin using MMC?)

I am not using my external domain name (windows live? whs domain name - https://xxxxx.homeserver.com). It does seem to work in terms of accessing my home network, but I don't have it forwarded right now thru ISP router (thru local cisco router) to WHS.

Thanx Guys...

I still think you have a issue with your network using different ip ranges for the router and server.
what is the ip for the server and what is the ip to the router for your local network,Plus what is the ip for the desktop you are using.?

If you have dhcp turned on for both routers and are using them both you will have major ip conflicts.
I would start as suggested by connecting the server directly to the desktop with a cable not switch, hub or router between them. Reboot both and see if the issue corrects itself.
I bet the ip range will change on at least one of them.
Unless you have defined a static ip on one or both it should work.

I think your right Ruben...

ISP FIOS Hub Router:
192.168.1.1 Westell a90
Active DNS and DHCP

Home Wireless Router
192.168.0.1 Linksys WRT610N
Active DHCP

Desktop1 - 192.168.0.109 (from Linksys dhcp services)
Desktop2 - 192.168.0.122
HP Home Server - 192.168.0.111

My Linksys router has DNS services pointed at Fios router (192.168.1.1)

So - I can successfully ping HPhomeserver and get correct ip address (0.111), but when I do a NSlookup on hphomeserver I get the following error message:

"Can't list domain hphomeserver: No response from Server The DNS Server refused to transfer security settings for hphomserver on the DNS at IP address 192.168.1.1"

I have looked up this error, and see some defined ways to allow this zone transfer on winserver 2003 os, but not on a router like the fios westell, Can't find any config options for allowing zone transfer.

Of course (as you said earlier) If I converted the westell to a bridge, then used Linksys (solely) for dns and dhcp services, all this might be mute...

I will try the test you recommend (or just change DNS to local Linksys?) and see what happens..

Thanx Ruben....

I tried to tell you so.
I was just lucky to notice it.
since it is a different ip range you get issues with the gateway dns servers.
If it were only the last three digits then it would work depending on the dhcp range settings.

So meaning 192.168.x, should be the same for all devices.

One router or the other needs to have dhcp turned off.

Just so you know.
When you allow a ip range..
It needs to be in the same say last three digits.
meaning 0-999 on the last portion to the right.
But it also means that the portion needs to be assigned in the device that is set for DHCP enabled.
