Yeah, that'll work fine. If you are planning on using lots of storage (video for example), then I'd considering 1TB drives. But as long as you've got extra space, you can always repalce it with a 1TB later.

I have 5 of these drives, 2 in PCs and 3 in my MSS, seem to be working great.

A year ago I paid just a little less than that for some 320s.... If I can wait 6 months maybe the 1 TBs will be this price!

My MSS free space is at 47% so I have a little time left to procrastinate and wait for prices to drop!

Frys.com has some good deals on Seagate drives with 5 year warranty.
http://shop2.outpost.com/template/onad/ ... tion/spot5

1 TB / 32 MB buffer is $269
750 GB / 16 MB buffer is $159

Tempting, but I am going to sit tight since I still have over 50% free.

Is that the newer 7200.11 drive? If so, that's VERY tempting....

$235 is still cheaper plus you get the 5 yr. warranty vs. 3 on WD. :)

Personally, I'm not buying WD drives any more since the complete non-support I got from them a few months ago. I submitted the proof of purchase that my drive was in warranty but because their database said it was out of warranty, it was like banging my head against a brick wall.

If you are going to buy WD, go through Newegg and keep your packaging because that was the only way I was able to get an RMA on my clicking drive. Not sure if Newegg would have been able to do anything on an OEM drive, though, since they did say I needed my packaging (this was a external NetCenter drive).

Hopefully none of us will need the warranty, but I feel a lot better about having 5 years.

Let's hope WD keeps dropping prices because I'm sure it is bringing the Seagate prices down. $200 is my trigger price for 1TB. Might get there sooner than I thought...

Western Digital has come out with the NEWEST drive in their line.

Its a 500GB of their "GREEN DRIVE" series. Three year warranty.

This week, it was $119.99 at BEST BUY.

NOW COMPARE, that 1TB for $240, and the 1TB DRIVE alone was $350 something..

BUT, they did have the EXTERNAL 1TB this week for $230.

Hey, isn't the external drive just an internal drive in an enclosure, but with a lesser warranty? It seems like the internal drive should be cheaper.

Anyway, I think when I upgrade my drives, I'll definately go for a 1 TB Greenpower. You might be able to get more GB/$ with 500 GB drives, but you're also dealing with only four drive bays in the MediaSmart Server, so if you outgrow 2 TB (4 x 500 GB), then it's actually cheaper to buy the 1 TB from the beginning, since you're basically throwing away a 500 GB drive to make room.

Oh, and I like Greenpower first for the (small) energy/environmental savings, but also because it will make things a little cheaper when installing solar panels, which I hope to do sometime.

Yep, that's the game WD plays unfortunately. A few of us have actually bought the 1TB EXTERNAL drives, and taken them out of the cheap plastic case, and used them as an internal.

and YES, its the SAME drive as the internal but only with a ONE year warranty. Doesn't make sense. EXTERNAL drives are usually more expensive, but in this case the INTERNAL is about $100 more.
Take it that this is in a RETAIL STORE, and their prices might be out of line or not updated. BUT I think Western Digital sponsors most of their sales. At least when I worked in retail, the store got price protection from the manufacturer.

I am happy with my WD 1TB EXT GREEN (gone internal).
