Post subject:  The Hard Drive Deals Thread

Okay, so I'd be willing to wager that most of us are at least considering buying a new hard drive or two if we haven't already.

I thought it might be nice to start a thread for those of us keeping an eye out for a good deal.

So far the best I've seen is a 1 TB "Green Power" (low energy consumption) from NewEgg.com.

I sort of want to wait until someone has a really killer sale, though.

Anyone seen any other good deals on large drives?

Any deals on 500gb drives? I think in my situation as I would like file duplicaton on my music and videos two small drives as opposed to one larger drive would work best for me.

NewEgg.com generally has some pretty good prices. I don't see any blowout deals, but you can nab a 500 GB drive for just over 100 bones.

I'm planning on getting this one:

I think 500 GB is the sweet spot for larger drives right now.

Post subject:  Any Thoughts on a 750g

I've been waiting for the 1TB's to come down in price. But I may have to pull the trigger on a 750g.

I considered that too, but I am worried that if I don't fill up my two free bays with large drives, that I'll end up scrapping the not-quite-big-enough 750 GB models down the road and buy a 1 TB drive anyway.

The available deals at NewEgg for the 1 TB vs. 750 GB models had a similar cost per GB, but the bummer of it is that I noticed the price just jumped $25 on the WD 1 TB Greenpower Drive. Arg!

Actually, digging a little on the net, I notice ZipZoomFly.com has it for $254.

Has anyone bought from them before? I haven't yet, but they seem pretty reputable from all the reviews I read. Any complaints were just about shipping times and restocking fees. There's another retailer selling for $244, but they didn't look very professional/trustworthy.

By the way, COPC, how do you like the drive so far?

I can't comment on either vendor but I can tell you that people I know who work with the manufacturers is telling me that hard drive prices will begin to decline in early February. External 1TB drives will decline from $269 to around $229.

a number of times and have never had a problem. Actually, the last thing I bought from was an external hard drive!

Never bought from them either...

The Drive is working nice and I noticed the temps are lower than the stock 500g in bay#1. I could not pass up the deal from my local Fry's...

Also it was nice cuz, it was OEM so no cables or hardware to mount but the MSS did not need it, so I did not have to toss the extra garbage.

Thanks, all!

I got the 1 TB MediaSmart Server thinking it would surely be more than enough space, but I'm quickly realizing that after all of the duplication, ripped video and backups, I don't think it's going to be enough.

I'll probably pull the trigger on the greenpower drive (one to start with). Now the only question is "when?".
