The MSS reports its drives as SCSI due to the SATA driver used to enable hot-swap functionality. They are indeed SATA drivers.

I am looking at several possible 1 TB drives to add to my MSS. Anyone care to comment on pros/cons/experiences with any of these?

I've used all of those except the non-GP WD, with no issues.

I do not understand. Both the WD drives are "Caviar GP" models:
Western Digital Caviar GP WD10EACS 1TB 5400 to 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM
Western Digital Caviar GP WD10000CSRTL 1TB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - Retail
    Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31000340AS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM
    HITACHI CinemaStar 7K1000 HCS721010KLA330 (0A35274) 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

Sorry, since the 2nd WD drive (retail model) didn't list variable speed I incorrectly assumed it wasn't GP. I have used the WD10EACS, the Seagate, and the Hitachi.

So you think the two WD drives are the same, only one is retail packaging and the other OEM? Otherwise identical? (Specs seem same -- descriptions confusing, even on the WD website!)

yes, the WD10000CSRTL is the retail model # of the wd10eacs. wd currently only produces one 1tb drive unit and sells two variants: the higher mtbf (= more time on the tester) RE2-GP and the CGP. iirc there are some additional variants for things like AV applcations: wdeavs, but they're all the same basic mechanism with varying firmware.

I was wondering which of the drives listed is the fastest. Solely based on the amount of cache memory one would assume that the Barracuda would be. In addition... I already have 3 500gig Seagates. Would staying with the same brand / type provide any benefits?

OK... I did a little research and found an article on AnandTech where they compared the 1TB Barracuda and the "Green" WD 1TB drives. They also threw in the hitachi for comparison.

Here's a link to the article for those that are interested.

http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdo ... i=3161&p=1

Hands down the Hitachi smoked both the Seagate and WD drives.

It's a bit noisier and runs a couple degrees warmer but for me the performance benefit outweighs the aforementioned caviats.

Looks like I'll be going with the...

HITACHI CinemaStar 7K1000 HCS721010KLA330 (0A35274) 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

...When the time comes.

Unless something better comes along.

Before I start - I feel I need to apologize for being the original user to hijack this thread (I'm the one who got us off topic with the whole conversation about buy.com and the thread hasn't returned to being about hard drive deals since...)

Having said that - and since we're already sidetracked...

I have to ask - what's the purpose of having a blazing fast HDD in the MSS? I'd think that there would be a significant bottleneck on the network - one big enough to negate any gain in performance that one HDD might have over another. I would think a larger concern would be the brand's long-run reliability. Just curious - is my thinking way off?

I agree. The MSS hard drives don't need a lot of speed to run taxing applications like games or anything, they simply need to store and transfer files.

The WD Greenpower drives fit the bill, being able to easily transfer enough for an HD video stream and then some, plus they're quieter, run cooler, and use less energy. I'd prefer a GP drive over the others, and I bought the first of my GP drives that will end up in my MSS just last week.

After thinking about it for the last hour or so, I, too, agree the WD "green" drive may be the best choice for a 24x7 operation like the MSS (at least as I use it). Less power means less operating cost -- and I intend to have the MSS a long time. Very importantly, the reduced heat should help with the aging of the drives, as well as other MSS components. Even more important when the MSS is loaded with four drives. And, of course, less heat also means less power for cooling...

And, for the time being at least, I am not using a Gb/s network -- only 100 Mb/s -- and have no plans to but any disk intensive applications into the MSS.

I think I am OK with my WD selection...

But it was a fascinating article! Thanks for mentioning it, OneLiterPeter
