Newegg's semi-annual sales flyer went out yesterday, and they are offering up a Seagate 2TB 5900rpm drive for $100 using this code: EMCNDJH23

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148681

Free shipping sweetens the deal a bit more as well. This the the Green drive, offering 64mb cache and a standard 2 year warranty. Sadly, the days of 5 year warranty from any drive manufacturer are pretty much gone, and we still aren't close to pre-flood drive prices, but these are a good deal for anyone needing big storage.

On a side note, Best Buy is clearing their shelves of these same drives, only they are offering the retail drives (with a FULL 5 year warranty) for the same price out the door. Store availability is obviously a huge YMMV, but its worth a trip if you are near a Best Buy and need a 2TB drive.

Newegg has Western Digital 2TB AV-GP drives for $84.99 with free shipping using coupon code: EMCNBHG38
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822136783

Note that these are AV drives meant for use in DVRs and such. I'm getting one to play with and see how it does in WHS but I have no first-hand experience yet. If anyone else has used them I welcome your input, maybe in another forum topic?

A buddy of mine at work hit me up on IM that Amazon's got an OCZ Vertex 4 256 GB SSD for $190. Check this out here - http://www.amazon.com/OCZ-Technology-2- ... rtex+4+256

I'd be all over this but my wife would shoot me. I've got an OCZ Vertex 4 in my EX490, except it's the 128 GB. Very nice drive. I've had it several months and it's worked perfectly.

Not sure how long the sale will last but that's a great price to get a generously-sized SSD!

I use this Icy Dock caddy from Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817994064

It's $21.99 so a pretty nice price.

Oh yeah. Every computer in which I've installed an SSD has shown a night and day difference. Every computer boots up in 15-30 seconds--those with less RAM and slower processors naturally will boot slower, but the SSD takes much of the disk I/O latency out of the equation. So a good SSD can breathe some new life into an older PC, especially if you can kick up the RAM a bit.

In the EX490, the only "drawback" (if you can call it one) is that unlike a 1 TB hard disk, you don't really get room on the SSD for the storage pool. This can be seen as a drawback or a blessing, depending on your point of view. For me, it's not that big of a deal. I like that the server boots and is fully ready to rumble in under two minutes, including the startup of the Drive Bender pools.
