FYI to All:

I finally, got a hold of the hard to find Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q9550S (12M Cache, 2.83 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB) LGA775, 45nm, 65Watt CPU for my HP EX 495 here:

http://www.accutecinc.com/

Just search the "components" section for part #BX80569Q9550S.

I paid approx $350+

That processor as I recall was a bit on the expensive side when it was readily available but at $350+ I do not see any benefit to acquiring it because for that cost you can pickup a motherboard and quad core processor and depending on what you buy you might have enough left over to pickup some RAM.

If you really want that processor and have lots of patients I am certain they will show up on E-Bay. Sometimes these things show up after you give up looking for them.

The S types are not readily available but I as you, I dont see what a media server would gain from it.

If your server will be transcoding media on the fly a Quad Core will make the world of a difference. Now in the past I have been able to do this with duel cores everyone who uses my servers to stream my media collection has always reported the best results from my servers running Quad Core Processors.

I do know of one person who installed a Q9550s in an EX490 who reported it to make a world of difference and was very happy he installed it. He was using his EX490 to stream movies online. I allowed him to stream some movies from my ProLiant Server which was running 2 duel core Opteron processors and after that I know he made an upgrade to a duel core processor he reported as having improved performance but it was not long after that he installed a Q9950s and was very happy with it. I do not think he upgraded his EX490 after that.

My comment was with regards to the cost of the processor being somewhat high is all but if I had an EX49x and wanted that processor I would wait until I could find one for $150 or less but at the $350 mark I would opt to use the funds to build. This is just me and what I would do but I do hope that spawnocula has success with his new processor and if he is happy with it then that's all that really matters.

The cost makes this ridiculous. I havent had or noticed any issue with my E5200 when trans-coding on the fly to my ps3

The transcoding I am referring to is over the internet. While I could be wrong I believe the transcoding is done on your PS3. I have a WDTV Live with can pull media from an EX470 with no issues what so ever that I can recall but its doing the transcoding not the EX470.

When I was looking three years ago. the q9550 was at $350.00.
I finally settled on a q9450s used on ebay for around $200.00 as I recall.
After a year of searching.
I was a bit nervous at first because I could not find much info on the s series of this chip.
But I installed it plug and play and it has worked fine since then.

But still both the q9550s and the q9450s are hard to find . And hard to swallow the price asked.

I believe I might still have a Q9550 not the S version sitting in a motherboard on a shelf.

Well it is not much to offer since a "S" version is needed to circumvent the heat issue on a ex-49X
