Post subject:  ps3mediaserver and Vail, any luck?

My server has been up and running with 0 issues for a week. Last night I installed ps3mediaserver on the Vail server and I could not get ps3mediaserver to recognize a connected ps3. I tried both the Beta 1.2 version and stable 1.1 version of ps3mediaserver. Windows Media Connect is streaming fine.

Prior to Vail, I was running ps3mediaserver with little to no issues on an old laptop running Ubuntu.

Anyone using ps3mediaserver with Vail?

Did you open up the firewall on the Vail box? I've not tried PS3MediaServer so hopefully someone else has and can chime in.

hmmm...I'm not sure, I haven't really touched any default settings in Vail. I'll take at what I can find related to the firewall when I get home. It's a good thought.

I had a lot of trouble with Vail's firewall when trying to get myiHome http streamer to work.

Well it is the firewall that was preventing the media server from connecting to the PS3. I tried to add the ps3mediaserver to the allowed list of programs in the firewall which did not help. However the media server connected almost immediately after switching the firewall completely off and restarting pms. Video streamed without lag, directly and with transcoding when necessary.

I'll take another crack tomorrow at how I can get this to work without switching the firewall completely off. I'm not too familiar with the firewall settings, etc. on Vail or any WHS, as this is my first server system. Should be just a setting somewhere to manually configure this right? I don't have time to do some googling now, will check again tomorrow. Thanks for your comments.

Go to the Windows firewall in control panel and choose advanced settings on the left hand panel. Under Private Profile change "Inbound connections that do not match a rule are allowed" to allowed and change "Outbound connections that do not match a rule are allowed" to allowed. This setting allowed me to use myiHome http streamer to serve blu-ray m2ts files to my Popcorn Hour A-110.

FYI, problem solved. I was tinkering around in the firewall and not getting anywhere. I noticed the option to enable notifications when incoming connections are blocked, so I checked that and tried to reconnect again. This time I was notified of what was being blocked. Turns out Java was also being blocked which I hadn't thought of to check for (ps3mediaserver being a java app and all...)...selected allow access, and all is well.

Thanks for the comments!

Hi All,

To find the PS3 you must:
Open Windows Firewall in Vail
Select Properties from the right hand section under "Action"
Select the Customise button under "Settings"
And then under each profile type tab select:
Display a Notification = YES

Then restart PS3 Media Server and Voila she will appear.

Thanks
