It's greyed out now, but maybe it's on it's way.

From Jonas at MS... "Bitlocker officially doesn't support software RAID, which the Drive Extender portion of Windows Home Server is technially a type of, and therefore is not supported on Vail itself. "

Hmm...I'm not sure how to take that. I think Microsoft may be sending mixed signals. Last week I downloaded Vail from the MS Connect site, and installed it yesterday on an HP Pavilion dv9700us laptop. Knowing that Vail was built upon the Server 2008 R2 codebase, much like WHS is built on 2003, one of the first things I checked was the availability of BitLocker. Sure enough, it was there and it was not greyed out.

I selected BitLocker and installed it. Vail announced a reboot was required, which I performed and the system rebooted without a hitch.

I had Windows 7 x64 drivers for that laptop on an external, BitLocker-encrypted USB drive. I attached the drive to the laptop, and Vail prompted me for the BitLocker password to unlock the drive. Once unlocked I was able to install the drivers I needed.

The laptop has two hard drives installed, so I went into the Server Dashboard to integrate the second drive. Right now the second drive is encrypted (the laptop was previously running Windows 7) and I hadn't decrypted or formatted it yet.

Imagine my disappointment when the dashboard showed me no hard drives available to manage. :(

I would really, really, really like to see BitLocker make it into the end product. I would much rather see Microsoft delay the release of Vail by 6 months to get DE and BitLocker playing nicely together, rather than not making BitLocker available.

Of course, I'm of the mindset that Microsoft should have made BitLocker available in all versions of Vista and 7, not just the Enterprise and Ultimate editions. There's just no excuse on Microsoft's part...they should either release a "Microsoft Tuesday" update to make BitLocker available to all versions, or make it available via Vista's next service pack and SP-1 for Windows 7, when it inevitably appears.

Because of the lack of encryption, I'm using my WHS only for media (music, videos, photos). I keep my work product and financial/business records on another system.

I'm not comfortable with the idea that someone could nab the WHS and have all of my data.

I experimented with TrueCrypt, but it was simply too labor-intensive to maintain.

Any other ideas?
