Hi.

I currently have a 1TB version of the X510 and would like to add a new hard drive to it - 2TB most likely.

Could anyone recommend a suitable drive please?

I had been looking at one of these ebuyer (product/183971) WD Caviar Green drives but noticed the following:

Quote:
The WD20EARS, along with the companion 1TB WD10EARS, are the first 3.5" drives to hit the market with Western Digital's new formatting structure, which divides the drive into 4,096-byte sectors instead of the smaller 512-byte sectors used in current drive technology.

The advantage? Fewer, larger sectors mean less drive space devoted to lead-ins and inter-sector gaps, which allows for formatting efficiencies in the high-90% range and usable-space increases of more than 10%. In short, it's a way to get more actual storage space from the same physical drive.

While larger sectors make sense for battling the diminishing returns on usable space as drives grow in size, it's worth noting that not all operating systems support this new technology. Windows users (including WHS users) from Vista forward should have no trouble, and the latest versions of Mac OS X and Linux are reported to handle 4K sectors without third-party software. If you're running XP, however, be aware that you'll have to use a software solution (WD's supplied WD Align tool, which provides 512-byte emulation) to get optimal performance, and you'll have to be even more creative in patching together a workable solution if you happen to use Windows Home Server 2003.

I'd be grateful for any advice you could provide on this.

Thanks :)

If you do a search of the forums you'll find lots of discussions about the WD EARS drives. I do not have one, so I can not speak from experience, but there is a jumper you can set on the drives or you can use a utility from WD to re-format the drives.

If you do one or the other they will work fine for you.

The following link will also help you with information on WD EARS Drives => http://homeservershow.com/wd-ears-drives.html

I have 2 running in my server and jumpered te recommended pins and they seem to be running fine but it will be sometime before I really know for sure since I believe they are only 5% full and have been in use about 1 month now.

Thanks for your response. Are there any other drives that you could recommend? I'm looking for a 2TB one at the moment and i've noticed from a few of your posts that you're not too fond of Seagate at the moment.... :)

I have some both 2 TB WD EADS and Hitachi Desk Stars that I am very happy with the EADS run abit cooler then the Hitachi drives but only by like 2-3c cooler. These 2 drives are very much on my comfort list of drives.

Having said that I will be honest with you and tell you many people do not like the Hitachi Desk Stars and refer to them as Death Star Drives and claim they run hot and are noisy. All I can tell you is they are quiet, they run a little hotter as mentioned and I am running model #'s HDS72020ALA330 which are often listed as 0F10311 be it Boxed or Bare on the Newegg site which is where I bought both of mine 1 boxed the other bare.

The WD Green Drives are funny in the way the CRxxxxxxx Part Number is listed on the box as its the same for EARS and EADS Drives so if you goto say Best Buy to pick on up you will not know which one you get until you open the box. However on Newegg they tell you up front if the drive is EARS or EADS and there is a price differenct too as the EADS are more expensive.

The Hitach Drives are selling around $139 and on Newegg the boxed drive comes with a $20 rebate where the bare drive is $129 both with free shipping. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... skstar+2tb

Hey GaryPM,

Just so you know WD does not ship a jumper with that drive so hopefully you will be able to find one in you home and if not you can get them at Radio Shack. I think its a poor decision on WD's part not to ship them with Jumpers just to save pennies.

Anyway Radio Shack carries them and you will get a life time supply of them in a package.

I'll have to vote on the Hitachi also.
I used them back in the good old days and have (5) of the 2 TB:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product

and (3) of the 1TB:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822145141

Seagate would be the last choice for me and I have seen a lot of bad reviews on the GREEN WD drives.

To each his own.....

I've had the best performance and reliability from the Western Digital Caviar Black hard drives.
