HP's memory specification for the X510 is: 2 GB PC2-6400 unbuffered DDR2 ECC 800MHz

With 64-bit "Vail" around the corner, that might become a bottleneck.

Anyone know of a 100% compatible 4GB substitute?

That thread is irrelevant as the 490/495 boxes use standard DDR2 DIMMs.
The X510s use ECC RAM, typically used in servers. Much harder to find.

I believe that is a typo in the HP marketing literature, the server hardware is identical to the MediaSmart Server and my Data Vault contains standard (non-ECC) memory.

I just disassembled my brand new X510 to have a look, and you're absolutely right, it's a standard (non-ECC) 2GB PC2-6400 DDR2 800MHz 1.8 Volt un-buffered DIMM.

For anyone wishing to upgrade to 4GB, these modules ought to work just fine:

Kingston: KVR800D2N6/4G
G.SKILL.: F2-6400CL5S-4GBPQ

Seems like memory cost is the biggest impediment to upgrading to 4GB.

Just installed the above G.SKILL 4GB DIMM together with an Intel E8400 3GHz CPU (both from NewEgg) without a single hiccup.

My X510 holds 6.5TB of Seagate storage. (1x500GB & 3x2TB). Idle CPU temperature went from 38 to 42 Celsius and everything appears to be running smoothly.
I'm now ready for "Vail". :cheers:

I did it also

My Datavault ist now running with a E8400 and 4 GB RAM. :cheers:

The performance is much better and i´m happy, but the biggest problem was to buy an 4GB Ram Modul in Germany.

To those who think the memory doesn't make a difference it really does. I used the Intel Q9550S about 2 weeks before I got the right memory
for the Media Server. After installed the 4GB's of Ram it was noticeable on boot up. To the ones that have said the memory doesn't work, I've listed the actual model number in my signature. I bought 2 different PC-2 6400 memory modules before I got the right one.

Here is a link from newegg with 4Gig / 1.8 volts / nonECC / cas 5

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... d=1&name=5

I notice they are out of the Muskin which alot have used.

Here is CPU info:
E6500 = $64 - Dual Core 2.93 - 65W - 45NM - Cache 2M
E6600 = $83 - Dual Core 3.06 - 65W - 45NM - Cache 2M
E6700 = $86 - Dual Core 3.20 - 65W - 45NM - Cache 2M
E6800 = $99 - Dual Core 3.33 - 65W - 45NM - Cache 2M < ----- This looks like a sweet spot for $ vs speed in a 2M cache
E7500 = $124 - Dual Core 2.93 - 65W - 45NM - Cache 3M
E7600 = $149 - Dual Core 3.06 - 65W - 45NM - Cache 3M < ----
E8400 = $168 - Dual Core 3.00 - 65W - 45NM - Cache 6M < ----- is 3M more cache worth $20
E8500 = $194 - Dual Core 3.16 - 65W - 45NM - Cache 6M
E8600 = $289 - Dual Core 3.33 - 65W - 45NM - Cache 6M
Q9550S = $349 - Quad Core 2.83 - 65W - 45NM - Cache 12M

Has anyone installed a Q9550s Quad core?
do you need to get into the bios to upgrade to Quad Core ?

I'd like to install the Q9550s ( with Artic Silver Thermal Compound or better )
with the G.skill 4GB DDR2 CL5 (with copper heat spreader )
and replace the rear fans with the highest rpm and CFM to expel the heat when required too

I could be wrong, but I have seen a few that have. Price is the hard part, I don't think heat would be to bad.
Double check though, don't want to have that money on my head. They may be using home built servers.

Here is one post I saw: viewtopic.php?f=25&t=5512&start=180
Another: viewtopic.php?t=7861

I'm going to go for the [E8400 = $168 - Dual Core 3.00 - 65W - 45NM - Cache 6M] money permitting. I would like to do all my video ripping/converting on the server to save transferring / network time.
