Hi,

I see plenty of posts about upgrading the CPU, particularly on the X510, and also on EX4xx. Yet, I couldn't find any information about a possible upgrade on the X310/311, which has an Atom 1.6 Mhz.

Is it or not upgadable, and if so, what should I be looking for?

Thank you.

As far as I know, Atom is "on the board" and can not be upgraded.
I still see x-510 and ex-49? on ebay for not to much cash. If you need more power then the beefier servers may be the way to go.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the reply. That's what I suspected, and the fact that there's no post about CPU upgrade for this model tends to kind of confirming it.

I'll try using it as is, but will look for a 4GB ram if I can find a cheap 2nd hand. BTW, do you know by chance if it should be buffered or not?

I don't know about ( buffered or not?) I do know that the servers do not need ECC, normal memory is what they use.
I upgraded my memory to the 4 gig but then noticed the server (running a backup on a client and stream a video at the same time) the memory use was 1.20 and have never seen ti much higher.
I believe I got a bigger boost out of the CPU upgrade, but the Atom may make more use of the memory, if you can fine memory that will work, it could help.
I would spend the money on a beefier server, but that's just me. I have always liked a little more power then I will need "just in case".
I believe the atom based servers are more about saving electric power and keeping cool and quiet.

Good Luck....

Thank you Gardian. I understand your point, although for now I will live with this machine and try to make it better as long as it's cheap. That's why I look for 2nd hand ram. I hope I'll eventually find out which is or not compatible (buffered or non-buffered).

Given I got a spare SSD, i also intend to use it for the OS. That can only help in making it snappier.

Cheers.
