As the title says, I've got an x310 and when I boot it with a paperclip on the status button I get 2 Aqua, three Red. (BIOS recovery source not present.) The only support I've found online is for people with an EX4xxx server, and it involves flashing BIOS, loading images, (in other words stuff that if I mess up, I'm cooked). I'm obviously hesitant to try the steps in those articles because it looks like a different product.

Anyone know what I'm supposed to do to recover this? A lifetime of files are stuck on this thing.

I don't have a 310 but I would first suspect the bios battery died due to the age.
( Not sure how to correct that without a debug board.)
Second, Even if the server died you can always yank the drives out.
Connect them to a pc
Then using file explorer. Turn on view hidden folders and files.
They will be all there to copy and use.
But I suspect that the battery or or a drive died.

The BIOS battery cannot be simply replaced? I need a completely separate motherboard to replace the battery?

In regards to loading the drives on a PC; don't I need to load them as the same type of array that they are configured currently in the x310?

The battery can be replaced but you may need to access the bios setting to accept the default settings after replacing it.
As far as the drives go no you can connect them one at a time.
The only thing is if you have duplication on, every file will be duplicated on more than one drive.

I have it in Raid 5 (4x1tb drives = 3tb).

I'll try to get to the battery and see if it boots after...

This makes me ask what OS are you running on the 310?
If you are running the stock OS that came with the server then you are running the DE drive pool software raid.
And as (Ruben Rocha) has said, you can get a usb to sata dock and get to all your drive contents (as long as the drives are OK)

If you are running some other OS and are truly running in a raid, then you may have a problem but you most likely would have the video adapter to load a different OS.

A little late now and I found out the hard way, but when you get into data storage, you should always have some kind of backup of the stuff (You can't Lose) outside of the server.
In ext drives/Cloud/a second server/nas/something. Even though Win Home Server has DE, one lighting strike/flood/theft/fire you could lose all drives. Everybody should have a offline/offsite copy of there critical data.

Good Luck Let us know what OS you are running and how it is going.

Then we need to know what non native OS you have.

Oh crap, I have two other NAS drives, both qnap that are raid 5. I didn't realize this one was not those. It's been so long since I got it. Really? I can just use a SATA dock?!?!? My tower case has one built in to the top for crying out loud! Let me try that.

That will be perfect, just remember to go into (folder Options and un-hide) files and folders. You should find your files by clicking around a bit. I would copy them somewhere else, Not cut and paste.

That way if you get the server fixed, it will be ready to go.
Also, be sure to mark the bottom drive, it has to be in that bay, the others don't matter.

Sounds like you are on your way. A video adapter would be real helpful. Good Luck

Ok so I have been able to access them via the SATA connector on my case. Already copied 2TB from the first drive. BUT: The 2nd drive is causing a motherboard beep code when I try to boot with it in. I need to investigate the code, but I think we have a winner here.

UPDATE:
One of my drives is bad. With drive pooling this means that I am simply missing 1/4 of my files. I've copied the other 3 drives. Taking it to a place today for a recovery diagnosis.

Awesome! Great work....
It only takes (1) bad drive to cause the server to do weird things. Your (maybe Bios/Battery) may just be a bad drive.

Once you have confirmed which drives are bad and which are good, then you can perform a recovery (not factory reset) with all the good disks and may be back up and running.

Good Luck Again, shout out if you have any questions/concerns. :mss:

P.S. You just updated your thread. If you had Duplication turned on , on your shares, then you most likely have not lost any files. Duplication is not on by default, so if not, then you are correct, you may have lost some data.

If you have the (3) cd's that came with the server then you can recovery it yourself without to much work. A few hours maybe.
If you don't have the (3) factory CD's then you have a problem.

Let us know if you need help....

Adding to what Gardian said.

If you have duplication on for all your folders.
and the bad drive is not the system drive.
you could just pull the bad drive, then add a replacement good/new drive.
Boot the server.
It will bark that the drive is missing.
Add the new drive to the pool using the console.
It will take a long time to settle down while it rebuilds the duplication on the new drive.
Possibly a couple of days.
When complete the cpu will settle down and the errors will go away.

This will only work if you had duplication turned on for all folders and it is not the system drive.

Otherwise it will be a recovery not reset once you resolved the bad drive.

So I definitely did not have duplicate turned on; everything was default on this drive. I'm waiting to hear from the recovery place how bad the drive is. I have 3/4 of my files copied back again, so everything is getting handled... :)

Sounds like you are doing everything you can do at this point!! Awesome work.

If you are wanting or able to get that server up and running again, i would recommend three things to make life easy.
1) I have already spoken of an out of the server / offsite backup of your critical data.
2) Setting the server up with 2tb Reds/Blues/Blacks Western Digital drives will give you the ability to turn on Duplication for the shared folders (full software raid) "which you didn't have".
3) Most important is the Free Smart software addin that will keep an eye on your drives and tell you long before the server would when a drive is going south.
With smart you can swap out drives before they die.

Good Luck
