Hi

My X510 running WHS v1 is working great but more and more programs has or is stopping the support for v1/XP so should I go for WHS 2011 (which also seems to be out of date) or a more modern OS?

I think I will use StableBits DrivePool.

I bought and installed win 2012E on my x-510 and tested it with upgraded ram and cpu.
It worked pretty good, what little testing I did.
I also installed 2011 and it worked, I just didn't like the feel of it.

I tried drivebender first, But Comp1962 told me how much he liked stablebit drivepool and I got it, It works great.
I have a DIY box now with win2012E and drivepool. It is for down the road.
I plan on running whs v1 on my x-510 as lomg as I can.
Not upgrading to win 10 for starters. Going to wait and see. I see win 10 as a huge fail. IMHO.
Goodluck
The x-510 and ex-490 are great /small platforms to work with. The vga cable helps if you go with another OS.

Thanks! I have upgraded cpu and ram already and I think I will go for Win 10 as OS with DrivePool.
I mostly use my X510,as a file server so I think I don't need a server version of a OS. I don't make an backups etc.
We only have Macs now and we use TimeMachine to a TimeCapsule.
I've read a few guides on how to do a unattended win 10 unattended win 10 installation so it's going to be interesting to see if I can get it to work. :)

My only concern would be if win 10 can come up with drivers for the old hardware.

I did see someone loaded the NON-pro version of win 8 or 10 and then was not able to remote in. Some people still don't know that it takes the Pro or enterprise versions to be able to rdp into them.
Let us know how it goes if you do it, others may be going down the same road....

Good luck

I did update my X510 to Windows 10 Pro this Friday. Everything is up and running and I chose StableBits DrivePool drive pooling software. I won a copy via Twitter also. :)

I first tried to install Win 10 Pro by unattended installation which I didnt get to work. I then took the hdd and put it in a USB hdd dock and forced an Windows to Go installation on the disk.
Right after the istallation was done I put the disk in the X510 and everything was up and running.
It was really easy and quick to add all content from the WHS to the DrivePool but adding the disks to the DrivePool, stop the DrivePool service and then move the content inside the folder DrivePool had created.

It's nice to have a uptodate OS again. :)

Thanks for sharing this, I'm also toying with the idea of Win10 pro for my 510 (currently running Win7 pro and it keeps nagging me to upgrade).
I fear a bit about hardware limitations though, as I'm still using the orginal CPU and RAM. Not sure if i want to invest into upgrading the 510 vs. switching to the HP Gen8

Aargh so many options :-)

I looked at the Gen8 and by the time you add on all the extras/os/raid boards/etc the price was way to much.
I built my own and installed Win2012E with drivepool.

The cpu upgrade for the 510 is about $50 and the ram would be about the same, just hard to find.
But everybody has to pick their own path.

I put an I5 in my win2012E box with 8 gig ram I think. Have a win7pro VM running on it and it is still pretty snappy without sucking down much power.

Good Luck on which ever way you go.
