Thanks for the update...
I have tried to install the Ubuntu server to my X510 but hit few snags and then ran out of time as this is a busy time of the year for me.

I hope to start again tonight buy modifying my EX475 Bios to allow for the AMD 3400 dual core 35w upgrade.
I am still leery about the procedures, as I don't really want to brick it.

My I pm you if I get stuck when I attempt the Ubuntu headless, as I am not Linux savvy yet.

Regards,

MerlinCan,

Sure I will help in any way I can. I have never used AMD procs, but it should make no difference to the install process.

Wondering about the BIOS update you did. A couple of questions:

- Where did you find the firmware?
- Did you use this page as a guide: http://www.delidded.com/how-to-update-c ... -ami-bios/
- If so, which version of the microcode did you apply?
- Did you have to use a VGA/debug cable to do this or did you manage to do this headless?

Any other tips, etc? I have a L5420 on my desk I'd like to use for a 490..... Got the HW mod, but was wondering about the BIOS.

Thx.

Below is a reply to a PM that I just posted for those interested in flashing the bios to include 1067a processor codes for the Xeon 771 chips such as L5430 etc.

Cheers

Peter.

You will need to install flashrom first.

Login to your new Ubuntu Server.

#> wget http://trasc.co.uk/NewX510Bios.bin
#> wget http://trasc.co.uk/NewX510Bios.md5
#> md5sum -c NewX510Bios.md5

#> sudo flashrom -VVV --programmer internal -c MX25L4005 -r ~/OldX510Bios.bin

Will save your current bios to the file OldX510Bios.bin

#> sudo flashrom -VVV --programmer internal -c MX25L4005 -w ~/NewX510Bios.bin

Will write the new bios file NewX510Bios.bin to the live Bios

sudo flashrom -VVV --programmer internal -c MX25L4005 -v ~/NewX510Bios.bin

Will verify that the Live bios matches the NewX510Bios.bin file. DO NOT REBOOT IF THE BIOS FAILS TO VERIFY. Reflash with the old bios and verify until you get a valid verification. Then OK to reboot.

you are looking for this section of output:

Found Macronix flash chip "MX25L4005" (512 kB, SPI) at physical address 0xfff80000.
Flash image seems to be a legacy BIOS. Disabling coreboot-related checks.
Reading old flash chip contents... done.
Verifying flash... VERIFIED.
Restoring MMIO space at 0x7f8bad1258a0
Restoring MMIO space at 0x7f8bad12589c
Restoring MMIO space at 0x7f8bad125898
Restoring MMIO space at 0x7f8bad125896
Restoring MMIO space at 0x7f8bad125894
Restoring PCI config space for 00:1f:0 reg 0xdc

And this is the important line: Verifying flash... VERIFIED.

That's it enjoy.

Cheers

Sparticle,

you have convinced me to take this thing out of my closet once again. I'll start with the RocketNAS and probably go for the CPU upgrade as well. Any configs for the PXE/TFTP deploy you can share.

Took me a while to get the the netboot to boot past all the questions about keyboard, language, mirrors and such (had to run it on a desktop until i got the preseed just right to see what was happening and mirror keyboard strokes). Plus i had a custom option in my dhcp server that caused the MTFPT to wait for 10 minutes before going with PXE boot, boot i finally managed to get it running, with several reinstalls since i root was disabled on ssh login and there is a bug regarding samba and pam on 14.04 so user account doesn't sudo . Now i just need to get some drives for it and maybe even do the CPU upgrade. BTW which FAN mod are you referring to in your post, there are a few mentioned out the

I pulled the wire from connector, less destructive, but man that's loud now. Any way to modulate the fans from unix or have them run at 50%. fancontrol does not seem to find any fan sensors though, just coretemp. Could the bios be modded in any way, i don't have the debug board so can't see vga for bios options.

Any ideas?

Hi sparticle,
i appreciate what you have done with the good old x510 and i decided to breath new life into my server which is still running with WHS v1.
I have no vga adapter, so i thought i could do it headless using PXE like you mentioned a couple of posts before. But i get stuck in SSHing into my server after PXE boot up.
Did i miss something? I'm running a DHCP anf TFTP server. My x510 optains an IP and the served ubuntu netboot image gets transferred. Everything looks fine except for a SSH connection to my x510.
How did you managed this? Thank you in advanced!

Greetings,
scorp182

Hello sparticle and other X510 friends,
I know I'm very late to the show but have just decided to upgrade my X510 and use it for linux server.
I'm preparing the list of things needed and came across the bios mod for quad core Xeon L5420 CPU.
The original link is dead and I'm looking for a good soul who could share a copy of the X510 bios modified by sparticle.
Thanks a million in advance :)
