Hi all!

For the past week my HP Data Vault Storage Works X510 has been freezing up throughout the day. Only way to get it working again is by holding the power switch for 4-5 seconds to power it off. I then can power it back on and everything appears to be working again. I finally had a chance to check the hdd, and it had over 300+ reallocated sectors and 2 or 3 pending. I assumed this is part of the problem, if not all of it.

I only have the 1 TB drive that came preinstalled with the system. I bought 2x 1 TB drives today. I want to replace the system drive and use the 2nd drive for a backup of the first, which I assume this would be called a server backup.

What is the exact process I go about transferring the system drive contents to the new drive. I have the User Guide downloaded from HP, but I didn’t see anything related to transferring content from old drive to new drive. I just want to make sure I don’t lose all the data on the data partition of the system drive.

Do I need to first install one of my new drives in the storage pool and then set it up as a server backup and then perform a server backup?

The easiest method, if this is possible, is just image the system drive and then apply the image to the new drive? Unfortunately the manual mentions nothing regarding this process, and insist that if you use a new system drive, you WILL have to perform a Server Recovery. I would assume this wouldn't be entirely true if we can just image or clone the drive to another hdd.

Looking forward to any suggestions so I can begin.

Thanks
Mike

You can clone the drive: viewtopic.php?t=6826

Thank you for the link, I'm cloning it now.

Hope that is the only reason the server has been locking up. I checked in the event logs, but there is never any mention of any errors or problems around the time of the crashes. Only record is that the machine was shutdown improperly or something similar.

Whats the best way to test the memory, since this is done before the OS loads, and the server has no video output?

Good luck with the cloning.
A second option would have been to add a new drive as a non-pooled drive then look in the client backup page in the console and you will see the server backup.
It will backup the "SHARES only". Then you could use a new drive and do a factory reset to new, setup all you stuff and then add the non-pooled back as a non-pooled and do a restore. But you would lose all the client backups, but there is another addin that you could back them up as well.
Plus going new, you have to setup all your stuff addins, users, etc/etc.

Hopefully there isn't something bad in the OS that will clone over.

Having that non-pooled drive shares backup saved my EX-470 data once and my 510 once, so I have two that I rotate out and keep one off site for fire.
Good luck.

Surprise surprise. Mine suddenly started behaving this way, too. X510 that is. Came standard with a 1TB drive.. And now, whenever too much read/write is put onto the primary drive it hangs.

Noticed because it was no longer able to back up the PC's at night, and more importantly would drop from the network altogether.

Very frustrating, glad to hear I'm not alone - although concerned now as to whether it is a software issue or a hardware issue?

I'm about to clone my drives - I'll let you know how I get on.

If it's just a bad drive, cloning is a great option (takes a little bit of work as it's not a regular clone).
But if you have OS problems, then those will just be cloned over with the rest of the OS.

Wish ya both luck, let us know how it goes.

As long as you have your data backed up you can try anything and if all else fails, just reload.
