I have two questions for everyone,

1. I need to access the BIOS on the DataVault x310 server. I have a GEN2 keyboard/mouse/VGA combo adapter connected to the DV. I have tired F1, F2, F6, F10 and DEL to enter the BIOS. None of the keystrokes lets me into the BIOS. I assume it is a jumper setting that I need to enable.

2. I need to reset the Administrator password. I know I can do a full recovery on the DV 310 but I don't want to risk losing any data and settings. The DV310 doesn't let me in through the console, RDP, or dialog box.

Thanks for the help.

Philip

Are you using a USB keyboard or a PS2 keyboard? The Gen2 debug cable had a few issues with certain PS2 keyboards that were fixed in Gen3. If you are using a PS2 keyboard, I recommend trying to get a hold of a PS2 keyboard made by Dell. The Gen3 debug cable work with any PS2 keyboard.

What does "DV" mean?

I'm not sure whether you need a jumper installed on the x310 but if you manager to take a picture of the motherboard and post it here, I can comment as to whether a jumper is needed. If it turns out you do need a jumper, then it does not matter which keyboard you use--the jumper needs to be present for the USB/PS2 keyboard to work.

I only see 1 jumper on the x310 motherboard marked JP1. Not sure if this needs to be jumped yet or not. I have 2 of these x310's so I can afford to play with one to find out. I will let you know what I find.

Well connecting the DEBUG Board Changed the boot behavior of the x310 to the point it wants to perform a PXE Boot and the health lights no longer offer you the option to boot into recovery mode nor does it boot into recovery mode with the absence of a bootable drive.

Setting Jumper JP1 does allow you to enter the BIOS.

To be fair I have 2 x310's and this one is proving to be a PITA getting to recovery but I do know its functional otherwise. For me this is not a big deal because I know I have 1 fully functional x310 and I have no intentions on mucking with that one as its part of my collection but the one I am working on I can play with all day long and most likely I will install another OS on it. I have even gone through and tried both Optimal and Failsafe BIOS Defaults and in checking the boot order all I can see is the drive installed and Network Boot.

Before I set the jumper the x310 would perform a PXE Network Boot and before I installed the Debug Board the x310 would boot into its recovery mode.

What I have not done is to remove the Debug Board to see if things return to normal. Lots of excitement with this puppy for sure.

UPDATE:

Ok I removed the DEBUG Board and the server now boots normally meaning the LED's indicate its in recovery mode. Again to be fair this unit appears to have an issue with recovering and I have made several attempts using multiple Win XP Notebooks I use for my other WHSv1 server recoveries.

I would be interested in the x310 behavior from those who currently have a DEBUG Board Connected to their server regarding the ability to place the x310 into its recovery mode.

FYI: I did a recovery on an EX49x with a debug board and the LED's act the same way but the recovery was successful. So my issue with this x310 is with the hardware itself and is not a reflection on the DEBUG Board which was something I needed to find out so I went through the process on one of my EX49x's.

That is good to know, I have never tried a recovery or reset with a debug board on, I have just attached the board to look around a working system and to install win2012E.
So this is good to know so I don't think i broke it when the lights change.
Thx
