Well last night I bit the bullet and bought a spare EX490 and a e6700 processor to upgrade it to from New Egg. Total cost $531.99. As disappointed as I am at HP for killing the MSS, I'm REALLY happy with it as a solution and want to keep it going, so I decided to purchase one last HP product before I try and make good on my promise to never buy HP again. I noticed that HP no longer has the MSS in stock (at least temporarily), and it wouldn't surprise me to see other vendor stocks quickly fade away. Some vendors may see the writing on the wall and could start lowering prices to clear shelf space for the next big thing (think good bargains) - although there is nothing on the horizon that screams "I gotta have that!" Or...vendors may see the rarity of the commodity and conversely raise prices. HP has said that they will discontinue the product at the end of the year, so I surmise that inventories have to be getting a little tight at this point.

I would suggest this thread be made a sticky to keep track of where the community can find the remaining MSS units. I feel like I'm suddenly working for a pet adoption agency and want all of them to go to good homes! :)

On 12/4/10 I noticed the following:

HP site shows the best pricing EX490 ($399) and EX495 ($499), but both are out of stock

HP does show the Data Vault Series as being available, but pricing is pretty much standard, albeit NOT the most expensive.

Amazon had both the EX490 ($449) and EX495 ($599) They have the DataVault Series as well, and their pricing falls between New Egg and HP.

New Egg had the EX490 ($449) and was out of stock on the EX495 ($599) with an estimated delivery date of 12/6/2010. New Egg also has the best pricing on the entire Data Vault series X510 with 1TB ($549) and X510 with 2TB ($724), X510 with 3TB ($819), and the X310 is out of stock

J&R showed the best pricing (EX490 $399 and EX495 $559), but were out of stock. They do have the Data Vault models but they are expensive, in fact they are the most expensive at the moment: X310 ($558), X510 1TB ($703), X510 2TB ($863), X510 3TB ($959)

B&H Photo said both were discontinued

Tiger Direct has the X510 1TB ($643)

Other vendors show them in stock, but either the prices are more expensive or the vendors have some questionable reliability ratings

I made it sticky, added a bunch of links, and also added the Data Vault servers as they the same features for the X500 series.

Thank you Alex!

I forgot to check on the Data Vault units and ended up canceling my EX490 + e6700 order and snagged a 1TB X510 unit instead. This way I don't have to crack the case and void the warranty and I get three years worth of warranty at that - all for a cost difference of $18.

I've updated the costs on the Data Vaults

Wow even HP is sold out on the 490?

Glad I jumped on it last week. Speaking of which, I'm actually waiting for FedEx to drop it off as we speak :beerme:

Maybe if MS fixes vail Ill update this to Vail. right now Im leaning more towards Yakuza's an others ideas in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=9643

Yes, with the exception of the HDD difference, the EX495 and X510 are identical from a hardware standpoint. The software is also the same aside from some minor text changes on some screens. If prices are close, then the X510 may be the better bargain since it comes with a 3 year warranty.

My X510 was delivered yesterday and I've ordered some WD EARS drives for it along with the 4 GB memory stick. (This is the same one I installed in my EX495 and you can really see the performance difference.)

Okay.. after 1 week, here is availability:

As of 12/10/10.... (Sorry, no links this time.)

HP site only shows the EX495, in stock at $579.99, no mention at all of the EX490 (I take this to mean that HP is completely out of stock and expects no more.) The X510 now shows as out of stock.

Amazon shows the EX490 (still at $449) and EX495 (now at $749.99) They have the DataVault X510 1TB ($634.99), the X510 2TB ($802.19) and X510 3TB ($939.69).

New Egg now has both the EX490 ($449) and the EX495 ($599) in stock. New Egg still has the best pricing on some of Data Vault series but the individual models are starting to thin out: X510 1TB (SOLD OUT) and X510 with 2TB ($724), X510 with 3TB ($819), and the X310 is still out of stock

J&R showed the best pricing (EX490 $399 and EX495 $559), but both show as still out of stock. The Data Vault models no longer appear on the site.

Tiger Direct still has the X510 1TB ($643)

J&R is expecting to get some in the next few weeks. I have an order in with them waiting for fulfilment. I got a call from them last night verifying my order.

So is the 490 worth the extra money over the 495? I've got a 470 with the 3800 dual core and the 2GB RAM upgrade but am concerned about the age and would like a little more horsepower. The 49x series seems much more upgradable as well. I found a used 490 on eBay for $349. A new 495 on Newegg is $599. So a couple of questions;
How does the stock 490 compare to my current 470?
Is it worth buying the new 490 from Newegg or
Should I go for the new 495 from Newegg?
Just wait and see if new WHS hardware shows up?

My gut tells me not to expect any new hardware until the smoke clears around Vail.

As for which model... I'm a fan of the EX495 because you don't have to upgrade it to get good performance. If you can get EPP pricing from HP, you can score the EX495 for something like $516 plus tax, which will probably result in a slightly lower price than NewEgg.

For any Australian members there are some great deals going on the StorageWorks X510 (HP never released the EX495 down under)
My X510 arrived today from HB Outlet - I ordered it on Sunday and recieved it today - cost for a 1TB unit was A$566 (which is basically US$566 at the moment - you gotta love the US peso! (if you're not from the US that is) - that's a great price with the 3 year RTB warranty on these systems
I couldn't resist replacing my MediaSmart EX485 at this price - guess I'll pass that one onto a new owner via eBay :D

The best place to look for a good price on the X510 is @ http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search. ... 510&spos=3

These pages on HP's site have been removed. They worked early today, but not anymore. :(

Funny the page was up this morning, but showed the units "Out of Stock, Check Back Soon." Several pages on the HP site now appear to be in the process of being changed, but it wouldn't surprise me if they are indeed gone. Things are changeing fast, so I'll try and update the remaining availability later tonight.

Word to the Wise... Don't delay if you want one of these last servers.

Wow, what a difference 4 days makes. Here is the score as of tonight:

HP: EX490 - Gone; EX495 @ $599.99, but out of stock. (The earlier absence of the page today appears to be a glitch with the website); X510 @ $699.99, but out of stock.

New Egg: EX490 @ 499.99; EX 495@ $649.99 Both in stock; X510 1TB-Sold Out; 2TB @ $724.99; 3TB @$819.99

Amazon: EX490 @ $489.57 - 3 in stock; EX495 @ $749.99 - 1 in stock; X510 1TB @ $634.99; 2TB @ $802.19; 3TB @ $939.69 The confusing wrinkle with Amazon is that that have stocks they sell themselves as well as authorized resellers. I advise shopping carefully because the reseller prices seem to be higher and the vendor ratings vary.

JR: EX490 @ $399; EX495 @ $559 Both show as out of stock. Note that member T-Bone noted earlier that J&R was/is expecting a handful of additional units, but the website does not reflect this. I would advise calling if interested.

At this pace there won't be much left in another 1-2 weeks.
