Amazon's pricing is very volatile. I was looking at the EX490 earlier today and they (Amazon, not a 3rd party) had it listed for $449.99.

For what it's worth, if you're located near a Fry's Electronics, you may be able to find an EX495 in store for $570. Their web site (http://shop2.frys.com/product/6066968) shows that they are out of stock for shipping, but some areas are showing in-store availability. I've not verified in-store availability for my local store with my own eyes, so your mileage may vary.

If I get a chance, I'll try to stop by and check to see if I can locate any. In my personal experience, Fry's inventory system isn't always reliable, particularly when you get down to 1-4 units of anything.

Update:

All the ones at Frys in California are the demo units on the floor. (trashed) No store to store transfer out of state.

JR says they are getting another shipment, but who knows if it will arrive by 12/18 while the $80 discount still applies making it $559.

No one else has them but newegg at their rip-off price of $649 for the ex495.

I cancelled my order through J&R they said it would be 3 weeks to get stock in. I was afraid they would not be able to get it. so I went with Newegg and scored 100 gift cert in the process.

ex490 Bestbuy $449:

My local Fry's is the Oxnard (Southern California) store. Online, they show as having one in stock. I stopped by at lunch, and they had a display card for an EX495 for $569.99, but the unit on the display was an LX195. This could mean that they have a unit in stock in the back (not on the shelf), or that they actually have 0 units.

I'm assuming that most know to be VERY careful with display units. These are often non-functional chassis mules that have no drives and do nothing more than run the front drive lights. Back when the EX47x series came out, we had a number of folks inadvertently purchased these thinking they were the real deal, which they weren't. HP is absolutely no help as they won't sell you the needed parts to get them functional and even if they did it would get cost prohibitive in a hurry. They usually have Demonstration Unit stickers on them, but uncrupulous retailers may remove the stickers. If you are buying any unit sitting out on display make sure you examine it carefully before you commit. You should see 4 drive trays and at least one hard drive in place behind the front door. If anything is missing, walk away - quickly. If in doubt, this is the ultimate sniff test - if all you see when you peer inside is an unrestricted view of the fans in the back of the unit, then it is definitely a demo.

Okay,

This is the best deal I could come up with as of today's date.

J&R Music World is getting ONE MORE shipment of the ex495 units. They are currently out of stock, however they have a $80 discount on the unit bringing the price to $559 plus free shipping through 12/18/2010.

The solution is simple: Buy it now at J&R and wait for delivery. Your card isn't charged until they ship so you can always bail on them if they don't deliver results in the coming days.

Keep in mind, since these are the final units from HP that J&R is receiving, they will have the v3 software discs with them, certainly a valuable addition.

I pulled the trigger and ordered a replacement for my tricked out EX470. I'll probably keep the EX470 around as a spare/backup.

I bought the X510 2TB from A Matter of FAX at $609.09 shipped. I wanted to get the 1TB X510 from NewEgg at $563.38 shipped but it was sold out. I've got my fingers crossed that this vendor can deliver. Their website indicates that the product is in stock.

I plan to pull the second 1TB drive out of the X510 and repurpose it. I bought three WD 2TB EARS drives from NewEgg for $89.99/each (shipped) to load up the X510. I'll recycle my eSATA Sans Digital 4-bay enclosure that's presently on my EX470 (with four 1TB drives installed) for use with my X510, giving my new X510 setup a total of 11TB.

I like going with the X510 rather than the EX495 because of the longer 3-year warranty. The smaller system drive is of little concern to me- I prefer the longer warranty.

Just ordered the EX495 from J&R for $529. Because they're back ordered the customer service rep dropped the price by the cost of the expedited shipping which gave a final price of $557.49. Not bad eh? Now hopefully this will really happen...guess I'm a skeptic.

If I get the EX495 I'm going to have a couple of EX470's for sale. One is stock and the other has a AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ EE SFF and 2GB memory upgrade.

Just received my ex495 today from NewEgg (which I subsequently ordered on backorder from J&R for $90 less). It arrived and those dirty scammers charged me $649 and the unit was OPEN BOX like the ones they had for $391 a couple days ago. It was clearly installed once and returned. Totally annoyed.

Are you sending it back? I've always had good experience with Newegg so I bet they'll make it right.

They wouldn't adjust the price to the open box price even though that is what they sent. Newegg sucks. As a reward for their sucky service they are giving me a free ex495 lease for a week. Ordered a cheaper one from JR, will swap the drives and send Newegg their unit back in a few days.

In retrospect, i should have bought an x510 to get the better warranty for same price point. Oh well.

As of 12/21/2010, here is what is out there.

HP: EX490 and EX495 are both gone. X510 is gone as well. Their website barely makes mention of them any more. Looks like HP is making good on their promise to be out of the Home Server business by year's end.

New Egg: EX490 @ 489.99; EX 495@ $649.99 Both in stock; X510 1TB-Sold Out; 2TB @ $724.99; 3TB @$819.99

Amazon: EX490 @ $489.27 - in stock; EX495 @ $649.99 - in stock; X510 1TB @ $653.709; 2TB @ $802.19; 3TB @ $939.63 The confusing wrinkle with Amazon is that that have stocks they sell themselves as well as authorized resellers. I advise shopping carefully because the reseller prices seem to be higher and the vendor ratings vary.

JR: EX490 @ $479; EX495 @ $639 Both show as out of stock. There are still reports that J&R was/is expecting a handful of additional units, but the website does not reflect this. I would advise calling if interested.

I suspect that once the final units are gone from New Egg and Amazon then these will get very scarce.
