Your EX485 has a specially designed heat sink that uses passive cooling because there is no room in the enclosure for a CPU Cooling Fan. All the EXxxx Series MediaSmart Servers are the same as far as the Heat Sink and passive cooling.

I just want to let others know that I used the valuable information I found on this site to upgrade my own EX495. I installed the Intel Q9550s with Arctic Silver 5, and the Mushkin 4GB Enhanced Silverline 991762, and it is working awesome. I do alot of video and my stock machine was so bogged down that it was crazy frustrating. It now operates like a champ. I was alittle nervous opening up a three week old machine, but the insight on these posts made it a snap. Thanks to all of you who post your insight.

EX 495 7TB

So i have a question and im not beng sarcastic just wondering ...
Why buy a 4GB chip that is only 800 FSB? the CPU you upgraded to can do 1333 FSB...so why not buy a memory chip that can be as fast?

Actually, he upgraded to the perfect memory. The memory FSB is locked, and is not linked to the cpu so regardless of what ram you buy, it will always run at 800MHz......well, 400MHz actually since its only one stick installed.

Okay so your saying that the FSB for the memory is locked in the BIOS at 800?
Im sort of still comfused .. doesnt the memory use talk int he same speed the CPU FSB is talking?

i could be totaly off the chart here ( and is were i need help understanding ) ..if the CPU is talking 1066Mhz FSB wouldnt it be better to have a memory chip that is also talking at that same 1066Mhz FSB?

one other thing, my understanding is that server 2003 does not read over 3.2 GB ( thats the max it can use ) if this is true then why update to a 4GB chip?

I have read many post in this forums but non really are clear ...
I to want to get more memory but i want what is best for the server..

Windows 2003 Server can recognize the 4GB RAM.

The reason that the 332bits Windows Vista/Windows 7 cannot access anything beyond 3.2GB is the hard code limit that was implemented in the Windows SW. It does not affect 32bits Windows Server version.

Are these The best solutions for the MSS? I would think that the Dual Cores would do fine but the Quad would be hit an miss. Since they are the same wattage as the E5200 should run the same power consumption and heat when on load right?? Im getting impatient for the new MSS server. might snap up something cheap and upgrade CPU. Really like that quad core Idea but not excited about power consumption.

Yo JDookie,

I'm looking for an update on how that q9300 is holding up in your mss.
I'm considering doing something similar to my Web server.
Since it never goes to sleep I'm wondering about your long term success.

Thanks

Yes, optimally, your cpu and memory fsb's would be synced and linked, but I don't think that's the case with the MSS BIOS. Don't quote me on this because I haven't seen it for myself, but I don't think the two fsb's are linked in the MSS BIOS, which means cpu fsb and memory fsb are independent of each other.

I have yet to see anyone post any kind of proof that they can run 1066MHz memory actually *at* 1066MHz. From what I understand, regardless of what speed memory you install, it will always default to 800MHz, which is why I've had a hard time believing that anyone with upgraded memory modules are actually seeing any performance increase.

Also, don't forget, we are only running one module of memory in the MSS, so we're not even getting the benefit of the dual channel capability. Our "800MHz" memory is only running at 400MHz since we only have one module installed. So, even if you were able to get a 1066MHz chip to run at it's native speed, it would still only be running at 533MHz inside the MSS.

The Q9300 is running like a champ, no problems at all. I've had it installed for a couple months now, and it runs 24/7 with not even a hiccup. Temps are fine, and the MSS runs nice and swift. It runs so good, in fact, that I'm wishing I would have gone with the Q9650 now, lol.

As far as power consumption, I plugged in a power consumption meter (Ryobi brand) to the MSS, and it doesn't even pull more than a light bulb. I can't remember what the exact wattage was, but it was somewhere between 35/50watts while idle, and I have four 7200rpm hard drives installed along with the Q9300. Under a full load it draws a bit more of course, around 100watts, but that's a very rare occasion, like when I'm adding data to the pool. The only time I see the processor actually using all four of its cores at more than 50% each is when its converting videos, and now that I have four cores running, that task doesn't take long at all.

The only ones in this list that you can use in your MSS are the Core2's. You can't use any of the i7's due to the 1366 socket. Also, using any "Extreme" edition cpu in the MSS would be pointless because you wouldn't be able to take advantage of the unlocked multiplier (overclocking the cpu).

Your list is missing the low power cpu's too, which are ideal for the MSS but they are very expensive, if you can even find them. They end in an "S", like Q9400S, Q9550S, etc. These are 65W quad core cpu's. Here's an example:

Dear People,

I've been educating myself on this site for some 3/4 weeks after I purchased a 3tb Ex495. I added a Seagate 2tb and a Seagate 1,5tb to it, plus some other smaller drives thru esata. Total storage 8,3tb. It sucks. Its 100% CPU usage for weeks 100% of the time. I bought a Xeon L3360 (quad, 65w) E0 Engineer Sample and a G Skill 4gb 800mhz module (F2-6400-CL5S-4GBPQ) (5-5-5-15 1.8v~1.9v). I also bought a VGA+PS2Keyboard+PS2Mouse cable assembly (Gen3). This last one did not arrived yet. Now my server is turned off because the way it is now its useless. As soon as the cable arrives I will replace memory module, CPU and tweak bios.

I believe its the powerfull one can gets an EX 495. I'm I correct? At least this was the best I found.

I could not find any powerfull 65w 775 CPU nor a 4gb 1066 DDR2 single module nor a 8gb DDR2 non-ECC single module.

Is there any recommendation regarding tweaking bios using the above upgrade?

Does anyone tryed a Xeon L3360 on an EX495?

Tks in advance,

Marco

I'd suggest instead of throwing hardware at your system to start a topic in the Troubleshooting forum, and figure out what process is consuming CPU.

Yakuza,

Tks. But My main concern is not the use of current CPU, but share my upgrade options and realize if someone have done something like that. I must say that my freezing problem was already addressed last night after I read some lessons from your posts.

rgds,

Marco
