E8600 in mine, 41C at idle. Fans at around 1200 rpm, quiet. Hd movies only, on gig e network, no transcoding. Runs great.

I've recently installed an E8500 in my EX490. Do I have to manually enable dual cores within the BIOS? I do not have a VGA adapter for the EX490. Any ideas?

Did you restart the server after you came up with the E8500? Usually takes 2 restarts to recognize the dual core since you had a single core in it originally.

Not sure how you guys are getting such low temps on the E8500..
i put a E7500 and mine runs about 45c and low usage and around 58c on heavy loads.. i put just a grain of rice size amount of AS-5 .. fans are running around 1230 or so ...

wish i could get lower temps but it is a Intel Core2 Duo so its diffrent then the duo core chips .. maybe thats why it runs abit hotter?

I just installed the E8400. The temp is around 43-44C idle and 46C with one HD 1080p streamimg. I did not do 2 reboots and it seems that the box starts with dual core showing in the system status. However I do notice that the CPU-Z may show that the core clock is 1.9G instead 2.9G from time to time as the previous post shows. Any idea why? Do I have to do a second reboot in order to make everything working fine?

Yes you have to do a 2nd reboot ..then all will be fine

usually requires 2 reboots to get it working if you are coming from a single core, however, if you are showing lower speed on cpuz, it is only intel speed step doing it's thing. On low load conditions the intel speed step will reduce voltages and lower cpu speed until load is detected, then it will increase speed. It is a good thing to idle along - less voltages mean less heat.

I did a second reboot and the WHS console is generating errors about having problem connecting to local host 127.x.x.x. Then I did another reboot and everything is fine afterwards. Now the WHS console shows dual core CPU utilization. So to conculde, the dual reboots or more is necessary.

The temp is still between 44-53C depending on the loading. Never go below 43C. I will install a CoreTemp to see more info regarding the cpu temp.

I bought an E8500 and the temps were great. So great, in fact, that it convinced me to buy a Q9300 two weeks later. I then swapped to the Q9300, and the temps are still fine, and the dual core is now for sale, lol. If you have an E8x00, and think its quick, just wait til you try it with a quad core!

What temp do you get with E8500 and Q9300?

I am using CoreTemp to monitor the temperature. It can display both cores and maintains both the lowest and highest readings. Currently the temperature ranges from 40C to 72C for my E8400.

I don't remember what the exact temps were with the E8500, but they weren't far off from stock. The Q9300 idles around 48-50C, and its currently converting some movies as I type this, and its rocking at 74C. All cores are running at 75%+ right now. If I watch the core usage, I will see mostly 75% usage, and every now and then a peak of 88%.

If I really task the processor using a stability tester type program like LinX or OCCT, the temps will get to 85C, but that's a constant 100% usage on all four cores & memory, and there is no way the MSS will ever put my cpu under that kind of load, so I don't really worry about it. As long as I know it can keep temps under control under all normal conditions, I'm happy.

I just got a E8500 but I am now curious since I have a Q6700 laying around.
Isnt it the Qxxxx series quad cores overkill for this box?
