Post subject: Ex490 RAM upgrade in UK

I have seen users posting 4GB RAM upgrades, but as I am in the UK I am struggling to locate any compatible modules.

I did try a Crucial 4GB ECC memory module but the system would not boot.

Does anyone in the UK know where you get a 4GB module that works?

It needs to be Non ECC which is probably why it wont boot. Dabs have some modules that fit the bill; but I haven't tried them.

I already looked at dabs, but they did not have single PC6400 4GB no ECC modules. The only other choice is to purchase a 8GB kit, but then they may not work.

Can you install DDR3 into the ex490? I have seen a post on a forum stating that you can.

I though that is was DDR2.

The 4GB module arrived this morining.

Fitted it.....and the server reports 3.99GB of RAM. I canceled the order for the Q9400S, as they supplier is having problems getting stock.

The RAM upgrade cost me just over £110 delivered.

Ebay? I don't know if you can buy from ebay, but I have bought things from the UK with ebay.

I have [NOT] used these but they spec correctly: The low price scars me, but could just be a good deal...

Thanks for reply but I think the low price is down to them being 2GB sticks! 4GB non-ECC ones seem to be as rare as rocking horse poo!

I have to ask about your sig, what do all the numbers mean? :)

Oh gees, I'm sorry, Might help if I open my eyes. Yep, all of those sneeky peats are 2x2.
Newegg, wow, I guess I better grab one before they are gone.

Could go this way: x1 $80
http://www.ebay.com/itm/271117548706?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

x2 $160

FYI I have win server 2012 essentials on a ex490 and setting idle it is using 1.4 gig of the 2 gig memory so I am sure the 4 gig will actually get used, the stock 490 I think it's over kill but did it anyway.
Good luck and thanks for pointing out it was time to shop.

The numbers, those are servers I have 9 total I think and the date I got them.

I guess with some work to do plus a few addons it would be running fairly low, 4GB makes sense to me.

I'm in the UK and both of those ebay listings only ship to the US. Think I will set up a search using their specs and see what trawls up in the net... as i'm fairly sure newegg is just for US citizens too.

Wow, I thought I was bad with two of them!
There was I thinking disk config, memory latency or some other piece of configuration rather than the purchase date!

For those looking for memory in the UK, I just bought one of these.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200788240608? ... 1497.l2649

Fitted to my EX-495 (Datavault X510) running Windows Server 2012 this evening and its working great. Reports 4GB RAM as expected.

4GB chips seem rarer than ever, and the price is fluctuating up and down a lot.

I found a listing for an 8GB set of PKR memory (2 X 4 GB) and took a chance on them based on the details. Now have both my MediaSmart EX490 and Data Vault X510 running 4GB of RAM for £80!

Details of the memory as below:
PC2-6400 - DDR2-800 - CL5 - 1.8v - 240 PIN RAM
SINGLE SIDED ~ NON ECC ~ UNBUFFERED ~ MATCHED PAIR

Hopefully may help others locate some suitable memory! Never heard of PKR but it works fine.... 8)
