I have been following this thread for some time now and thinking about pulling the trigger on the CPU upgrade. While some of the quys are using the quad core low power cpu which are expensive. How this one Q8400 Processor BX80580Q8400

I dont think you will ahve a problem eventhough is 95W and it run hotter than the Q9550S. The price difference is big compare to what i paid for my Q9550S. I would recommend you use some AS5 with it as well.

I just recently purchased a ex495 two weeks ago adding two additional Seagate 1.5Gb HD for storage, after years running DIY systems. I could not be more than happy with it. Today I just upgraded it with a Quad Core Q9300 and Mushkin Enhanced Silverline 4GB DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) module. Now it is running much faster, the console comes up a lot faster. I recommend that anyone who owns one, go for the upgrade.

Next thing I am looking at is adding an Sans Digital TRM5-B for extra storage and server backup.

I finally upgrade the CPU Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200S LGA775. I chose this because I wanted to stay within the 65W range. I got it off EBAY brand new for a really good price. I had some issues with the RAM Mushkin Enhanced Silverline 4GB DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) running hot and causing the system to shut down. As of right now I'm running with the stock 2 gigs ram and couldn't be happier.

I'm sorry to delay so much, but I was on vacation. I have one of this processor on my HTPC. I would use it on EX495 because its max TDP is 95w. As far as I know you should limit it to 65w. The only one Quad 65w is the Q9550S or the xeon L3360. Note that the mentioned quadcore has a "S" at end on name meaning its a low voltage one. I hope I could help you out. Now i've got 12tb of almost gone space on my server, not to mention all others hds on my home net.

I put a power meter on my MSS, I monitored 35-100W max. That's from idle to full load.

JDookie,

When you did the meter was your MSS full (All drives). Did you have to do any additional cooling? I am really interested in doing a quad on the ex490 if i can get one at a decent price. Since there will be no more MSS's seems like the best bet. go big or go home right!!
