The sever gives of the impression that the full 3.99GIG is available. Not sure how true this really is as my understanding is 32bit systems only should give you 3.2~.

You can use full 4GB! Microsoft introduced with SP1 or SP2 for Windows XP (32 Bit) the ~3,2 GB limit because of compatibilty issues. WHS v1 is based on Windows Server 2003. Windows Server OS (even 32 Bit) don't have this limit.

I'm enjoying WHS 2011 on my EX495. It's time to upgrade the CPU and RAM though. Can we drop in the CPU, and 2011 will still boot up? (no re-install needed I hope)

I've read page after page on multiple threads, but I can't decide on which CPU. I want enough speed that I can stream Blu-Ray ISO's stutter free, and trans-code other 1080P videos or possibly re-encode/repair other large files etc. I'd like to be able to remote access into the WHS, and not have the screen freeze slow down/delays as it does under load now. I'll have either Vuze or uTorrent running as well. (and other streaming apps/services I'm sure, iPhone stuff)

So the question is, which CPU will give me enough extra horsepower, with out worrying about heat and possible fan speed noise increases while under load?

Or.... ?XXX

I wouldnt mind having VT so I could run other Virtual OS's to test out etc.

I'd like 4GB too, and I see Mushkin thrown around a lot. So far I'm only seeing the 4G kit for sale which is really 2x 2GB sticks.

Mushkin 240 pin PC2-6400 4GB ? (where is the single chip for sale at?)
I think standard memory in this this is 800Mhz, but the motherboard supports XX00Mhz memory too right? (which is ??)

While we're at it, I wouldn't mind having the VGA Adapter too if anyone knows a cheap place to pick one up.

I'm happy that someone wrote drivers to get the LED Drive lights, and Health light working in WHS 2011!

I'm happy using StableBit Drive Pool so far as well.

There is only one slot that I know of, so you only have room for one single 4GB. Buying 2x 4GB is a waste of money.

As i noted, i have two servers to upgrade the RAM, so i would be using both sticks, hence the reason 2 x 4GB.

My concern is if the specs are ok? Is 1.9V a concern?

Thanks!

I have a EX495 with the standard 1.5TB Seagate (ST31500341AS), and a WD 2TB Green(WD20EARS) additional drive

Unfortunately the Seagate System drive just died, fortunately all important data was duplicated.

I am ordering:
-> 2 x 2TB WD Caviar Black Drives (WD2002FAEX)
-> Mushkin Enhanced Silverline Frostbyte 4 GB Desktop Memory 996557

one of the Black drives will serve as the OS drive and the 2nd will be a data drive along with the original WD Green drive

Does this upgrade sound good? are there any issues I should consider with the components I am purchasing?

EDIT: What if I had all Green Drives? how does that affect overall performance?

Also, until I read this forum post, I did not think a CPU upgrade was possible...what is the fastest Dual-Core/Quad-core CPU that EX495 can run(recommended that is)?

Thanks in advance for the help

I have an ex495 and I want to upgrade my RAM. I am looking at this:
Mushkin Enhanced Silverline 4GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Desktop Memory Model 991762
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820226089

This is compatible right? (Looking at the thread I believe a few of your have bought this exact model, any issues?)

Currently it is $62.99 + free shipping. I am new to Newegg.com so I could get a $10 discount on it. Bringing the actual cost to $52.99. Is this a good price?

Finally, I do not plan on installing it until December when my warranty runs out. Based on the price that I can get the stick of RAM for and the availability of 4GB sticks should I buy now or wait?

thx guys.

"I wouldnt mind having VT so I could run other Virtual OS's to test out etc."

Really interested in any information regarding getting VT technology to work. Currently my stock processor don't work for 64bit guest and I want to know if I can run 64bit guest OS if I upgrade to the quad core. I have not seen the BIOS but I am about to find out if there is a VT setting there because I just bought the VGA adapter.

I would also love to see 8GB of ram work on it even if I have to waste cash and buy 2x8GB just so I can have more than 4GB of ram.

Please share if you have had sucess with this, thank you!

I would love to put 8gb into my two ex490s as they both run low power quad cores. However I've not seen any LGA775 system which allows you to have more than 4gb per slot so I don't think it's possible. I'm mainly posting in case someone has evidenced to the contrary. If you find out please let me know.

Cheers,
Al
