Did you do anything special when you formated the drive? Like set the partition as active or anything? Quick vs full format?

Also what step did it fail on the first time?

Thanks

it is Step 3 & 4
you get this error if you don't format the drive 1st

I didn't do anything special, I just formated using quick format

I will do again, it weird that with this 1TB Seagate LP
I can hear the drive keep working (spining non stop), even thought I am not doing anything on ex495
on original 1.5TB wasn't doing that

I just got my HP X510 yesterday and I am also having trouble doing the full system restore. I want to use a WD 1.5TB GP drive to replace the stock 7200rpm Seagate.

I also copied the DVD to my local PC (Win 7 x64, Windows Firewall disabled)
Connected the network cable directly between PC and the WHS
Put the WD 1.5TB GP drive in slot 1 (Full Format, Set as Active Partition)
Opened the HP Restore software
Started the WHS, waited for it to blink Teal & Red
Hit the front reset button with a paper clip
It waited for it to blink a whitish violet
Started the HP Restore process

It fails on step 3 of 4.

Update: I have XP Pro 32Bit a chance and it continues to be EPIC FAIL!

Failing in step 3 of 4 means the booted EX can not retrieve the install file from your PC after it has recieved an IP address from the TFTP server application.

Most likely issue is that you have a static IP address setup in your network card of your PC. Either set it to DHCP, or better set it to 169.37.37.33 , subnet 255.255.255.0. NO gateway or DNS.
Also kill all processes in taskmanager that you can prior. If some application is using a port it will not retry.

step 1 = network boot setup and start
step 2 = EX boot via PXE + get ip address for TFTP process
step 3 = retrieve boot files from PC ip address and place them on the HDD <-- this is why the HDD must be preformatted.
step 4 = Restart & boot WPE environment, get IP address again and let EX signal HP application its in restore mode & ready to serve.

The actual TFTP software is copied in a temp dir in users and settings I believe, there actually is a log file in there.

The file is called "tftpd32.log" search it, delete it and try again. If it fails post the file here so we can look into it.

Actually I've found this isn't the case, I just performed a successful Factory Reset using a drive that had all partitions deleted. When the server pulls the BOOT.WIM image file it loads it into memory, it's only 122mb.

I've written what I believe to be a pretty thorough guide to the Server Recovery process on the EX49x and DataVault servers. I'd appreciate any of you that can reviewing it, let me know if I've missed anything, and if the troubleshooting steps are helpful. Any suggestions or feedback is welcomed.

Thanks for the guide:

Can you add to the guide or comment here about putting the server itself into recovery. I had tried with the first ex495 unit that i had received, that had problems, to put it into recovery mode, but the colors of the health indicator seemed different than what hp indicated and i could't do the recovery and didn't know if i properly put it into recovery mode. hp emailed me a guide to to the recovery and it said:

"press and hold the button located at the back of the unit until it powers off
- press the power button again to turn it on, and using the paper clip, push it into the reset hole and remove it - just a "poke"
- the health light (located to the left of the reset hole) should appear to be blinking a violet colour on the LX195 models, and blinking white/red on Ex490, Ex495, and Data Vault x510 models"

For me, i never saw it blinking white/red. Is this the correct color scheme?

Thanks.

One question. Hp's instructions (unless they have recently changed) say to use 169.37.37.38 you say to use 169.37.37.33

Which is correct or are both correct?

Thanks.

The manual I have linked in the Wiki article says the light will be "violet", it's a mix of the aqua and the red LEDs. It does look different than the alternating red/white blink before it enters recovery mode.

A good way to tell is to remove the system hard drive and power on the server, it will automatically boot into Server Recovery mode and you will see the proper LED behavior.

33 should work fine, by default the client will try to acquire .37 and the server will acquire .38 as shown in the Wiki article.

Technically both are correct.
The diffence is that the .38 ip is IN the dhcp pool that the tftp server is offering. In general this is a bad thing to allocate a static ip inside a dynamic pool. Especially when the program running is going on autopilot.

The .33 is wel outside the dhcp pool and is in the subnet mask stated 255.255.255.0
This subnet means that the PC with ip 169.37.37.33 can 'see' all pc's from 169.37.37.1 to 169.37.37.254 without using the normally defined Gateway address. All these numbers are regarded as 'in the neighbourhood'. PXE network booting only works together with a boot server in the same subnet.

I would always use a static IP in this recovery, the TFTP server has been modified by HP to wait until the PC itself also gets a ip allocated but it still comes down to timing. It can be avoided using an static IP address.

However, looking through the guide I realised one component is a major variable; the NIC hardware of the PC itself. When you reboot the EX to start the network link is cut for a moment. Not all hardware deal with that good. It may take to long to re-establish the connection and maybe Operating system status can be in the way as well (Windows puts the NIC as unconnected for a short while in that instant you turn the EX off and on).
From a technical perspective I can not think of a reason why the restore would not be possible with a simple 100mb switch in between the EX and the PC (not other devices to be connected).

The NIC of the PC may very well be the unstable part. It might be worth your while changing the properties of the network card to fixed settings for speed & duplex (use 100mb and half duplex) and disabling the IPv6 feature as well.

@yakuza.: I find that contradicting the other observations but I think we speak about 2 things. For the running of the initial boot the hdd needs no partitions indeed using a RAM drive or alike. But after the initial loading the EX reboots one more time and then it reports to be in recovery mode. As it boots (step 4/4) without PXE there must be data on the drive at boot. Maybe the automatic pre-boot time partitioning does not work properly on all drives maybe. It would explain that some users did need to do this, and you not.

it's interesting that the information that i had received from HP tech support is different than the manual. Here is the info i received (the manual mentions nothing about setting an ip) which i gather is not necessary after reading this thread:

Server Recovery (or Factory Reset) Procedure using Lx195/Ex490/5/Data Vaultx510 Server

Tools needed:
- MediaSmart Server LX195, Ex490, Ex495, OR Data Vault x510
- paper clip or push-pin (for reset button located on front of server to the left of USB port)
- Windows Home Server Recovery DVD
- a PC or laptop with the WLAN (wireless network connection) disabled and a DVD reader drive

Step 1.) in XP go to add/remove programs (or "Programs & Features in Vista", "Uninstall a Program" in Win7) of control Panel, and please remove these 2 pieces of software; HP MediaSmart Server and Windows Home Server Connector

Step 2.) attach the server network cable to the network port of the PC (direct-connect)

* (do not run the recovery DVD yet)

- we need to assign an IP next

Using XP:

A.) click on start, control panel, network connections, right-click on Local Area Network, and select Properties.

B.) highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), select Properties, click on "use the following IP address"

C.) fill in the fields like this:

- IP address 169.37.37.38
- subnet mask should fill itself in with 255.255.0.0 when you click in that field

D.) click "ok" to both windows

Using vista:

A.) click on start, control panel, network and sharing center, click on View Status which is located next to Local Area Network, select Properties

B.) highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IPv4), select Properties, click on "use the following IP address"

C.) fill in the fields like this:

- IP address 169.37.37.38
- subnet mask should fill itself in with 255.255.0.0 when you click in that field

D.) click "ok" to both windows

Using Win7:

A.) click Start, Control Panel, View network status and tasks, click on local area connection, select Properties,

** place the server into recovery mode by following these steps:

- press and hold the button located at the back of the unit until it powers off
- press the power button again to turn it on, and using the paper clip, push it into the reset hole and remove it - just a "poke"
- the health light (located to the left of the reset hole) should appear to be blinking a violet colour on the LX195 models, and blinking white/red on Ex490, Ex495, and Data Vault x510 models

**For Your Information:
- Server Recovery: repairs the Operating System of the server while trying to keep the data you stored to it intact
- Factory Reset: wipes off all data you have stored to the server and installs a fresh instance of the Operating System, bringing it back to the 'like new' state

*** now we can run the server recovery DVD. Within 10 minutes you should see the message saying it has been placed into recovery mode successfully. At this point it should take at least an hour to complete. Your server will display a window notifying you that everything is finished and now ready to log into the console and ready to use. Continue with updates once inside the server.

** Important **
When you are at the point that allows you to pull up the server console and enter your password, please remove the server from the PC, and connect it back to your router (connect your PC back to the router, too) also, don't forget to go back into the network connections and change the "use the following IP address" back to the original setting of "obtain an IP address automatically", and click "ok" to both windows.

Looking at your guide, I can get all the way to the next to last picture. I then select either Factory Restore, or Server Reset... which then results in a failure instead of your last picture.

I am going to be away from my server for 10 days. I'll try again when I return.

This is not true, the server does not reboot after ftping the WIM.BOOT image from the client PC. If it did it would lose the image that resides in memory.

Interesting, that explains why it fails on every PC you've tried, it must be an issue with the Server.
