Hi Guys,

Looking to make the jump from my EX475 which i upgraded with the 2gb ram and 1640 cpu,

I have noticed in various news articles that the EX495 will not be made available in the UK :( (boo hiss HP)

Does anyone know as of yet if I could purchase the 490 and turn it into a 495? anyone tried this as of yet?

I know its early days.

Cheers

Different boards and CPU's; you'd be better off (and cheaper) going for a Datavault

Different CPU's, yes but from what I've read so far, it seems the boards are the same??? Can you verify that statement?

 No.... fast typing and not engaging brain. They are the same, but the price difference for the UK the datavault is likely to be cheaper than buying the 490 and then upgrading

NP, just thought you might have picked up on something new. I agree, pricing is a crazy thing.

I had no problems upgrading the CPU in my EX490 to E6300 (a step up from from the E5200 that comes with EX495); in fact, it was less expensive than buying a stock EX495.

I also upgraded my 490 with the E6300 processor with no problems, actually seems to run a bit cooler under load :)

Hmmm so there are 2 possible options then,

The datavault. x510, which I hope arrives on our shores and at a decent price.

Or to go with the EX490 and uprade the cpu, which i have no issues doing, ha ha as soon as i get anything its tested and as long as it works ok its then taken apart and things such as thermal paste replaced with as5 or mx2.

So you guys who have upgraded the ex 490 im guessing you have had no issues with the heat sink that comes with it? I was lead to believe that the ex490 shipped with a different heatsink to that which is fitted to the ex495?

Cheers for the suggestions guys.

As far as I can tell, the heatsinks are the same on all EX49x models. I had no issues with mine, and with AS5, my E6300 temps vary from 32C at idle to 62C under full load. With a stock heatsink (the one that comes with the CPU), the E6300 normally runs around 10C cooler.

I just upgraded to an Intel 5200 Core 2 in my EX490 today. The performance increase is like night and day. Clicking on tabs in the MSS console used to take 20-30 seconds some times to respond... Now it's immediate... but one problem, I don't see two cores, only one. Do I need to change out my kernal to multiprocessor?
