Keep me up to date on the install. I've been wanting to do the same.

Will do.

It's been shipped out, can't wait to get it.

So here is what went down.
Yesterday my CPU arrived.
I tried to figure out which program I can use the benchmark the current existing E4200 before I plop this Q9550s in there.

I acquired CPU-Z to identify the CPU and PassMark to bench it.

The below image had me worried for a moment since CoreTemp didn't see it as a Q9550s, so I fired up CPU-z and it confirmed my purchase :-)

Onto PassMark....

Never using this program before, I opened it up and ran a complete benchmark on the EX490 but focused on the overall Parkmark rating and the CPU mark figures.

I was given a score of 470.3

I then installed the CPU and re-ran the test.
The score was a shocking 413.7

I figured that since the Q9550s was a 2.83Ghz processor while the E8400 was a 3.00Ghz then maybe that was the reason.

As I looked around in PassMark, it mentioned something about 'The number of processes'. I figured that they meant cores...so I changed the default number from 2 to 4 and re-ran the test.

The results were 844.1!!!

Here is the text output of the difference:

Quote:
PassMark Rating
ex490_old 413.7

EK490_core2Quad 844

CPU Mark
ex490_old 1907

EK490_core2Quad 3477

It's been a great upgrade so far. I've always wanted this CPU once I read about people being able to use it...just needed the price to settle a bit and for my funds to open up.

Wow, that is very tempting, but Temp wise. How is it holding up, are the fans able to keep it in check enough to run in the summertime when the house heats up a bit, I wonder?
I will pick one up on ebay, just because I don't think they will get much lower in price, before they are gone (won't be able to find them is what I fear).

Goodluck Did you have something working on the server that needed the extra cores? Or just looking for performance boost in general?

Just an update to this thread - I upgraded my EX490 to a Xeon Quad core L5420 with instructions from this thread: viewtopic.php?f=25&t=13760

It works like a charm aside from the misreading of the temps (thinks it's 60*C when it's 30*C at idle) but the fans don't ramp up or anything weird. It was a good 10 dollar (shipped) upgrade from ebay!
